6 Lines Great Adventure
Justin, 8/30/2007 09:45:16 AM
So Tuesday Mike and I hit up 6 Flags in an effort to somewhat salvage the summer of 50 Roller Coasters...And I have to say I feel a bit ripped off. We got there and immediately waited in line TO PAY FOR PARKING! Fifteen fucking dollars! I understand paying for parking if I can park closer or something, but theres not even anywhere else to park! Its either pay for parking, or don't get into the park. Then it was on to the line to get into the park, manned by mouth breathers that couldn't get people through quick enough. Ridiculous.
Once we were inside we got directly on the still viable Great American Scream Machine...After that was when everything went downhill.
We were there from around 12:15-8:00PM and rode 7 coasters. 7 in almost 8 hours! Thats disgraceful. I can understand the hour and a half wait for Kingda Ka, the world's tallest fastest roller coaster...but 1 hr 20 minutes to get into delapidated Skull Mountain? What the fuck is that?!?!?

From Great Adventure's wiki:
2007:While street and character entertainment is prevalent, few sit-down shows have been scheduled for the 2007 season. Ride operations significantly improve, reducing wait times even with larger crowds.

I'd hate to see what it was like before. This was a friggin Tuesday! I mean we took like 20 minutes to eat cheesesteaks that were two sizes too small, and I took about 5 minutes to win a stuffed Wolverine by defeating some people in a Water Gun game, but thats all we did other than waiting in line and riding the coasters.

The coasters mostly all kicked ass, but I definitely expected to ride at least 10 of the 13 and get out of there around 5:00 or 6:00. Ah well, next time I'm going on a day it rains. In April.

We rode the following:

1.Great American Scream Machine
2.Kingda Ka
3.Nitro
4.Runaway Mine Train
5.Medusa
6.El Toro
7.Superman:Ultimate Flight

5 of the 7 were the same as 7 I rode when I reviewed 6 Flags on 5/27/04. This time I swapped out Batman:The Ride and Skull Mountain for Kingda Ka and El Toro...So you can go to that post and read my reviews for those coasters.
As for the 2 new ones, Kingda Ka was definitely a trip, and that moment when it almost completely stops at the top and you feel like your at the top of the world just before you hit 100 MPH was definitly worth the wait in line....at least once. Probably not twice though.
EL Toro was pretty freakin awesome as well, but all the wood going by is just so disconcerting it left us feeling all messed up.
Anyways the Summer of 50 Roller Coasters ends with my total at 20.
And I officially and respectfully toss in the towel. No more lines for Justin anytime soon.

And just like every other time I've been there since it opened, Batman and Robin:The Chiller was indeed closed. A crappy movie that spawned a crappy ride.

    McLovin
    ChefMagnoliaFan, 8/24/2007 02:15:16 PM
Now as a guy who spends literally hundreds of dollars a month for food, and on ocassion a hundred or so a meal its nice to know that I don't always have to do it. I went to McDonald's today for lunch and had the Double Quarter Pounder w/Cheese combo with a refreshing coke for a mere 6.50... And I have to say it was pretty much the most satisfying meal I've had in weeks. It was delicious. It was McFuckingAwesome.
I mean part of it could be the anticipation...I'd been denying myself the golden arches for months now, and today when I finally gave into my McUrge it was like a giant deep fried weight had been lifted off my shoulders (and into my gut). Of course the meal probably took a couple days off my life but whats life worth living without some McSatisfaction?

I was thinking something very similar as I chowed down on my last Carl's Jr of the summer. Paradise all in a greasy paper bag for $5.15. Maybe it's time you supersized yourself...

    Dream Diary
    Justin, 8/23/2007 12:20:43 PM
Mikes always like man I had this wacky dream last night. So I took the liberty of keeping a file with these for him because he never gets around to getting a book to write them in himself. I only do so because most of them are so hilarious.
So now I present to you the first batch in the Mike's Dream Diary Series, taken from May - August 2007....now I'm sure hes had some others at some point, but these are the ones he deemed funny enough to discuss.

Oh man I had this dream last night that we had an intervention for you to curb your concert-going obsession... everybody we know was there.
Then Gabe from Midtown showed up and you asked him to do an acoustic set and I woke up screaming.

Speaking of work, last night I had a dream that you booked us on a Caribbean cruise. But, when we got to the port we were informed that you made a mistake and we were actually booked on a Brazilian prison freighter and would be en route to a detention center where we would be forced to perform improv comedy for the drug kingpins and rebel soldiers incarcerated there. And, as usual... woke up screaming.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you about the very short dream I had last night. We were waiting around at the mall, when Matthew Fox came
walking up. Even though we were excited to ask him a bunch of Lost questions, we had to wait for some mouth breather lady to finish asking him for medical advice. Finally, he brushed her aside and posed for some pictures with us while we grilled him on Dr. Marvin Candle and the Hanso foundation. Unfortunately, this dream did not provide me with any insights or answers to the show.

I was at work in the break room. For some reason there was an automatic can opening machine there. My boss arrived with two cans of dog food and opened them with the machine and was like "eat up!" Then he was like "ah just kidding! No, but seriously, I'm gonna eat mine." Then he ate the whole pile of dog food mush straight from the can. Then I had one bite of mine and spit it back up. That's when the dream ended. Strangely, the substance was clearly identified as dog food but it was more like cat food in nature, just in bigger cans.

I was walking all around a mall, Neshaminy I think, when I walked by a tv. The phillies were playing. They had made the wildcard and it was a playoff game, but they were losing 36-13. All of a sudden you showed up and said "Our team needs us, we have to get to the ballpark". Seconds later, we were there watching the bottom of the ninth. Then the Phillies lost.

As a change of pace, here's my Fall Movie picks.

The Kingdom (9/28) - Yeah. You weren't expecting that were you? I figure I'll give Michael Mann and his pretentious action movies another chance.

Across The Universe (9/14) - With a musical that looks this abstract, there's always a chance it'll be great (and an equal chance it'll suck), but that's a chance I'm willing to take.

The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (9/21) - Brad Pitt has a pretty good track record with any movies, but Westerns... should be a winner.

Run, Fatboy, Run (9/28) - Simon Pegg... that guy's never made a bad movie or tv show. Of course, David Schwimmer is directing.

Shoot 'Em Up (9/7) - Can't. Fucking. Wait. For this movie.

The Darjeeling Limited (Oct) - Well, I love all of Wes Anderson's movies but I was a little troubled by the blah preview for this one. Hopefully it will keep up the tradition.

Michael Clayton (10/5) - Clooney playing a lawyer or something... I'm in.

American Gangster (11/2) - Denzel Washington vs. The Russell Crowe - Ridley Scott tagteam. Could be good. Could be grand.

I Am Legend (12/14) - It's gotta be better than I Robot. Better see The Omega Man first.

Charlie Wilson's War (12/25) - Spend Christmas with Tom Hanks and tense geopolitical melodrama!

Sweeney Todd (12/21) - A musical I've wanted to see ever since I saw Jersey Girl + Tim Burton. Blood for blood, by the gallon!

There Will Be Blood (12/26) - The greatest American actor Daniel Day-Lewis teams up with an above average director, PT Anderson in an Upton Sinclair story. Better see it just so I'm familiar with one of next year's Oscar nominees.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets (12/21) - I think they kidnap the president in this movie.

Walk Hard (12/21) - Jenna Fischer! Judd Apatow! Woo!

    Honorable Mention: Bee Movie.

And yes, I know The Heartbreak Kid isn't on my list nor is Good Luck Chuck. Will I see both? Yes. Will they be any good? Doubtful.
  • From Justin on 8/22/2007:
I had a hard time making this list, not because there aren't a lot of good lookin' movies coming out, but because I couldn't really decide which movies looked good enough to decide I was seeing them based on blurbs in EW and IMDB. So here I'm presenting a list of movies I'm pretty much guaranteed to be seeing...with a whole bunch to be named later. But you can bet your ass I'll be in line the day it comes out for the first movie on the list...

    September
1.Shoot Em Up - 9/7 (That harsh motherfucker Clive Owen!)
2.Brothers Solomon - 9/7 (More fun with Will Arnett!)
3.3:10 To Yuma - 9/7 (Crowe VS Bale)
4.Mr. Woodcock - 9/14 (Finally...after being pushed back a hundred times for rewrites...I still have some hope for it.)
5.Resident Evil: Extinction - 9/21 (Trailer looks freakin' awesome!)
6.Good Luck Chuck - 9/21 (J.Alba is enough to bring me in anytime...not counting Honey.)
7.The Game Plan - 9/28 (I still like The Rock!)
8.Run, Fat Boy, Run - 9/28 (Simon Pegg funnyman.)
9.The Darjeeling Limited - 9/29 (I liked Wes Anderson's other movies enough to give this a look.)

    October
    1.Heartbreak Kid 10/5 (Stiller+Farrelly Bros.+R rating.)
2.Hitman - 10/12 (Based on the video game.)
3.Dan In Real Life - 10/12 (From the trailer it looks like it has a chance to become my favorite movie of the season...maybe even the year!)
4.30 Days Of Night - 10/19 (Josh Hartnett VS Vampires.)
    5.The Comebacks - 10/26 (I love David Koechner!)

    November
1.Bee Movie - 11/2 (Jerry Seinfeld comes to the big screen...as an animated bee.)
    2.American Gangster - 11/2 (Looks pretty tight.)
3.Fred Claus - 11/9 (Like Elf, but with Vince Vaughan!)
4.Mr. Magoriums Wonder Emporium 11/16 (My Uncle looks like Dustin Hoffman kinda.)
    5.Beowulf - 11/16 (I'll see it, but I still hate Angelina Jolie.)

    December
1.Leatherheads - 12/7 (Clooney VS Jim from The Office on the gridiron!)
2.The Golden Compass - 12/7 (I'm intrigued...but mostly by more Eva Green..although realistically short of a hardcore porn I couldn't possibly ever see anymore of her.)
3.I Am Legend - 12/14 (Could be as good as ID4...Or as bad as MIB2.)
4.Alvin And The Chipmunks - 12/14 (Jason Lee VS classic cartoon characters round 2.)
5.Walk Hard - 12/21 (Jenna Fischer in lingerie! More Apatow comedy! I'm there!)
6.Sweeny Todd - 12/21 (Johnny Depp has the skills to pull this off...I think.)
7.National Treasure 2 - 12/21 (I'm not ashamed to admit I loved the first one!)

    Family Tradition
    Justin, 8/15/2007 06:00:37 PM
My family doesn't have many traditions, but I plan on upholding one of the ones we do have at my new place... Like my grandmother, and my parents before me, I plan on keeping boxes of cereal in my fridge. So when you come over and open it up looking for a snapple or something and you see the Cocoa Krispies or Special K or Cinnamon Toast Crunch or whatnot just sitting there, don't bother asking me why. The answer is because thats where they've always gone!

    CNN.com is crap
    Mike, 8/12/2007 05:15:34 PM
Lately I've been noticing that almost all of CNN.com's "top news" articles are just plain stupid fluff to grab clicks. Lets take a look at some of yesterdays headlines:

    Latest News

    * London's Big Ben stops chiming
    - Oooh fascinating. So a 150 year old clock may require some maintenance work. What a scoop.

    * Pacific hurricane's winds near 132 mph
    - Hurricanes are windy. Wow.

    * Most dangerous job? (Hint: not mining) Video
    - This is nice, make light of the danger faced by the miners who are trapped/dead in that collapsed mine.

    * WCVB: Dads create bulletproof backpacks
    - I don't even know what this means, but it sounds pointless.

    * Monster truck goes wild Video
    - Hmm, because monster trucks usually obey normal traffic laws at demolition derby shows?

    * Chris Noth will return as Mr. Big
    - I don't even know how this would qualify as entertainment news. Was his role in Law and Order: Criminal Intent so engrossing that he couldn't spare a month to make the SATC movie? This guy couldn't be any less famous.

    * 18 people rescued from house without AC Video
    - This may actually be a story of some importance but the headline begs the question: why did they need rescuing in the first place? Why not just leave?

    * WGCL: Teacher charged with rape gets raises
    - Just plain offbeat news. I'm sure the teacher can't be fired until he is convicted and the annual raise pay cycle probably just fell in the middle of the process. This should be the least of everyone's concern on this topic.

    * Pill can tell you if you're overheated Video
    - Sweat is also a good indication.

So that's just a sample... but just from a randomly selected day. It's like this every day. I guess it just proves that there isn't enough top new to fill a day. But even so, bury this crap in the offbeat section or use headlines that are less sensational. Why not at least provide some international news? It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if people knew what was going on outside the US.

    Tracy Morgan Is Perverted
    Justin, 8/6/2007 08:07:52 PM
If you want to hear some raunchy, dirty, hilarious stand up comedy, then I urge you to seek out ex-SNL star Tracy Morgan. Jgo and I caught his act at Caroline's On Broadway on Friday night, and I must say...Tracy is one dirty and funny man. He will make you rethink everything you've ever thought regarding blow jobs.

Jgo and I also hit up the Warped Tour at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island...here are some my quickie reviews on that.

Hot Rod Circuit - We arrived into the venue just in time to catch the end of underrated rockers Hot Rod Circuit set...if you ever get a chance to see them play, you should. Why? Because there songs are awesome and catchy as hell.

The Matches - They were entertaining... The lead singer has a great stage prescence and knows how to entertain.

Vaeda - We watched their act mainly because we could see the stage they were on from under some shaded trees...it was fucking sweltering out. If you ever go to Warped REMEMBER YOUR SUNSCREEN!

Meg And Dia - Saw their acoustic set in the Myspace tent while we waited for Straylight Run for their acoustic set...Not too shabby actually, liked them better than when I saw them open for Say Anything... It also doesnt hurt that lead singer Dia Frampton is a real cutie.

Straylight Run (Acoustic) - Turn your head right and click on the setlist archive to read my review on them....But I got to meet Michelle after the set!

Cute Is What We Aim For - If you like pop punk, then you have probably heard another band that sounds like them at some point. Not bad. To me it was a pretty forgettable set though, not unlike 3893 others I've heard before.

Alkaline Trio - After hearing good stuff about them for years I don't know what I was expecting...they were good, but at this point in the day I was working on not dying from heat exhaustion, so I wasn't as attentive. Maybe I'll catch a real set of theirs sometime.

    Straylight Run - Click right.

Coheed And Cambria - Possibly the biggest crowd of the day, which was kind of surprising to me, and sucky for me because I couldn't get closer to Claudio and his muppet like hair. The band fought through sound problems to put on a hard hitting set, and the new song rocked...but seeing Coheed do a 30 minute set is just a big tease. See the whole production, Final Cut and all.

Newfound Glory - Finishing the day on a high note with good old NFG and their set of reliable standbys was nice. And I didn't almost die this time like I did when I saw them at Warped 2002!

So that about covers my 5th Warped Tour of Duty (01, 02, 04, 05). Warped 2004 will most likely forever remain the standard bearer of the tour in my mind, and every year I say I'm not going this year...but really I don't think I could forgive myself if I missed it two years in a row. Its just a summer tradition by now just like Reel Big Fish and Rita's Water Ice, and mediocre Will Smith movies. Plus theres tons of scantily clad ladies to be seen everywhere! Thanks to Jgo for putting me up for the weekend, and I'm sorry you had to sit through 90 minutes of Hot Rod!
