California Here I Come: The Story of One Poster's Cross-Country Trip
Brian, 8/25/2004 10:31:04 PM
So where to begin kids. I guess I'll do a day by day break down, perhaps with some added bonus factoids at the end.

Saturday:
Wake up, watch some television. Suddenly realize that I have to leave soon, and that I haven't fully packed yet. Throw everything into a car and beg Mike to drive to BWI. While killing some time in BWI, buy the first two postcards. Fill them out. Realize that there are no mailboxes to mail them from. Get frusterated. Get on plane. Land in Rochester. Ah Rochester, the land of the so-called "Trash Plate." Proceed to not eat a trash plate and instead going shopping at Wegman's around 11PM after picking Adam, Jess' friend from high school. Rochester seems an awful lot like Caledonia sans the Meijer. Go to bed and plan on waking up at 7.

Sunday: Start the day off nice and early. Planning ahead, but clearly not far enough, we realize that 3 people in a car with lugage is fine, but that there's no way that the two extra friends we're picking up in Vegas are not going to fit. Fill car and drive off anyways. Drive through western NY, PA, and easter OH before arriving to Sandusky, the home of the greatest amusement park in the world. Around 2PM we enter the park. Seems like it's going to be a nice day. Proceed to ride various rides until about 8PM. For more about the worst hour of the trip, read Mike's postcard from Cedar Point (it includes Saves the Day and rain or some crappy variation thereof). Leave the park around 8PM to head to Caledonia. When driving by Ann Arbor, I realize that I have taken a wrong turn. Luckily make up time due to lack of cops on the road. Arrive home to Caledonia to find that my sister is having a bonfire with a bunch of her friends form work. Go to bed anyways.

Monday: Not a lot happened. We drove around a bit, ate a bit, and hung out with my friends. All in all a typical night in Caledonia.

Tuesday: Wake up early. Actually going running. Shortly thereafter regret running. Mom comes home and makes an excellent breakfast of french toast, bacon, and blueberry sauce. Go to dentist appointment for the first time in almost two years AND have no cavities. Seems to be shapping up into a great day. Leave for Denver around 7PM. The rest of the night and the early morning is a bit of blur. I got about 2 hours worth of sleep. The rest of the time was spent trying to stay awake. There was a stop somewhere in Iowa and another in Nebraska- all in all not eventful. Take the early morning shift and almost fall asleep at the wheel. That about takes us to...

Wednesday: Arrive in Denver around 2PM. Denver is a cool town and we're in a pretty nice hotel due to Adam's connections. Decide to visit various areas of Denver in order to take it all. A trip to Red Rocks (awesome) followed by a tour of the Coors Brewing Factory (free beer) and dinner at Illegal Pete's was all part of the fun. We picked up free tickets to 7 Mary 3 (anyone... anyone...) but realized that the next days adventure was going to take 14 hours to get to. Go to bed early.

Thurday: Wake up at 4AM. Hit the road by 4:30. I take the first leg. Driving through Colorado was actually very pretty. This part of the trip was filled with lots of stops, but not really sure where they were. Basically we drove for long long period of time with a stop at lots of rocks and a Navajo trading post on the side of the road only to end up at the Grand Canyon just in time for the rain to hit. The rain quickly passed and we got some nice pictures, saw a wolf, and lots of ravens. Drive through one of the coolest thunderstorms I have ever seen to get to our sleeping place of the day.

Friday: Going running again. Regret it again. Head off towards Vegas. Stop at the Hoover Dam along with way. Some obvious facts about the Hoover Dam: it used to be called the Boulder Dam, but was renamed after our 31st President, and it is really really tall. Drive on to Vegas. Check into our place at the Excaliber and meet up with Jess' two friends from. Proceed to kill over an hour getting stuck in rush hour traffic on the strip looking for a damn liquor. Get drunk, go to clubs, get in free due to three attractive female escorts, play blackjack, lose lots of money, pass out.

Saturday: Wake up, go to buffet, feel like crap. Hang out by pool, feel like crap. Finally start to feel better and plan for the night. Decide to eat at Margaritaville: high point drunken uncle of a man about to get married bites the phalic balloon hat off of her head. Proceed to walk through the big casinos and actually win money at the slots. Sit down at the tables and almost lose it all back again. Brings my casino losing streak up to 3 straight trips.

Sunday: Wake up early to avoid traffic on the way to LA. Get stuck in traffic anyways. Arrive in Fullerton around 3PM. Head to my old hometown of Huntington Beach. Proceed to spend the rest of the day looking for an independant music store to buy Mike an Orange County music t-shirt. Can't find one. Decide to go see the Exorcist: The Beginning. Bad idea. Walk out wondering how I was talked into that. Go to bed.

Monday: Wake up early, try to go looking for any music shop. They all seem to be closed until at least 11AM. Head to LAX defeated. A short stop to 'Hotlanta and I was a plane back to B'more with trip over an almost full week of work ahead of me.

Some numbers:
Miles driven: over 3,000
Postcards sent: 26
Longest number of hours in a car in one day: 20
States hit: 14
Rides riden at Cedar Point: 9
Money lost: Way too damn much to count

So that's it, a bit boring, but perhaps I'll write up funny stories in the days to come- I was just hoping to get the webmasters off my back. Figured the best way to do that was write the longest most boring post in the history of WWSG. Enjoy boys!

  • From Mike on 8/25/2004:
I've had more interesting trips to Delaware ... nah, just kidding ya, thanks for the massive update
  • From Charlie on 8/26/2004:
So wait, why is Jess moving to L.A.?
  • From amytai215 on 8/26/2004:
u should've written daily journal entries a la Bridget Jones...post calories consumed, cigs smoked, or beers guzzled at the heading of each day...that would have made for lively reading! it sounds like u had a great trip!

    Weekend Of Insanity
    Justin, 8/24/2004 11:38:43 PM
What a crazy weekend...heres the higlights among other things.

---Went to the strangest concert venue perhaps ever, at a gym/fitness center/skatepark...The Flipside Summafest featuring Allister, Midtown, Hidden In Plain View, Punchline, and The Early November, saw 2 stages in a gym, one stage in a ballet studio, and another in a kids classroom/play area. It was witnessed by about 300 kids and some exercisers. Allister and Midtown still managed to put on some pretty kickin performances though, especially Midtown's Gabe, who shined on the new material...Plus he just sort stood there and talked to us when we were sitting around outside.

---Hit on married waitress at an Outback Steakhouse in Virginia...eating steaks before a rock show does not sit well.

---Me, Mike, & J.Go saw Without A Paddle
---Me and Mike saw Collateral while J.Go didn't want to see it again, so him and our new pal Hayley saw Exorcist's prequel...he was horrified, while she loved it.
---Me, Mike, Irene, and Charlie saw the fantastic Garden State...J.Go didn't want to see it again, so he saw Maria Full Of Grace...by himself.

---The mystery of TW began Friday night as he up and disappeared with no trace...wild theories abound...did he drive to Milwauke? Has he careened off a cliff and died? No, he went to get his car inspected...mystery revealed Monday morning...total time of mystery...54 hours. bonus, he came back in a minivan I'm told.

---I didn't get Pearl Jam tickets after about 2 hours of trying...Fuck moveon.org, fuck ticketmaster, fuck the ten club, fuck supposed fans who buy tickets and put them on E-Bay, fuck ebay...etc. etc.

---Me, Mike, RJ, J.Go, and Hayley go to the Thirsty Dog. Everyone is impressed when Hayley sucks down an entire Mind Eraser in 0.5 seconds at RJ's urging.

---Hours and hours of Sunday is spent trying to fix my broken shitbox computer...It remains broken as of this writing.

---About 14 pounds of Japanese food is purchased from Matsuri Sunday night, and has to be carried back to the apartment in a box and 2 bags. Someone didn't help carry it while he was eating an ice cream cone though. They will go unnamed....(it was RJ)

---My gel explodes inside my bag all over my tooth brush. I brushed my teeth with it anyway. I felt nauseous for hours afterwards...all in my head, or gel poisoning...you decide.

---Mike, RJ, and I rock out to a captive drunken audience of 2 Saturday night...they leave soon after

---Mike, RJ, and I rock out to a captive audience of no one at all...we come downstairs to be told we sound awful. We are excited someone heard us play.

well that about covers everything right? no wait...just one last thing...what the hell was it?....oh yea....

---WE SAW A MOTHERFUCKING TOPLESS PROSTITUTE ON THE STREET AT 3 AM IN BALTIMORE! What a weekend.
  • From fifreak on 8/25/2004:
The waitress probably was only engaged. The giant rock on her finger was an engagement ring, not a wedding ring I think.

Some people say that going to a movie by yourself is liberating. I didn't find it to be like that but at least it wasn't as bad as I thought.

I was pissed that Midtown refuses to play songs from their first album. In my opinion, it's the best album and the only one I want to hear songs from.

So it took TW 2 days to get an inspection?? Did he sleep at the garage?

MOTHERFUCKING CRACKED OUT NASTY TOPLESS PROSTITUTE!

    Garden State
    fifreak, 8/15/2004 03:20:15 PM
Somehow I beat Mike and Justin to this one. I made it to this movie last night with some work peeps. It was pretty full but not sold out, I guess everyone else was off to AVP. My co-worker Brett summed this movie up the best by saying, "This movie was about nothing." What he said, definately has some meaning, but I wouldn't judge this one too quickly. I actually really enjoyed this one. Zack Braff did an excellent job with this piece... yeah we'll call it that. His acting was pretty good though I found it hard to totally think of him as anyone besides Dr. Dorian. In fact I felt like these characters had a lot of similarities, especially in mannerisms which I guess are really Zack's mannerisms. Natalie Portman was pretty good but I think I enjoyed her more in Attack of the Clones. The movie definately had some sad and funny parts. The most meaningful scene for me is when they are in the pool and talking about what home is. That really hit home (pun somewhat intended) for me. *MILD SPOILER* I definately didn't like the ending. It was too predictable and cheeesy. But all in all, I say this one is definately worth seeing. Compared to recent movies I've seen, it's way better than Manchurian Candidate but it's no Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

    TBS BITCHES!
    Justin, 8/10/2004 12:18:37 AM
Today I ventured to ...shudder... New Jersey to see Taking Back Sunday do an intimate acoustic performance and autograph session for the first 200 people who bought their new (KICK ASS) CD at Vintage Vinyl 2 weeks ago.
After waiting around back of the shopping center in line with other emocore fans in the scorching heat for a little over an hour, the line was called over to a small stage set up by the back entrance. Adam and Fred then jumped up on it accompanied by Eddie who took a seat next to it...They then went on to explain that some girl who hadn't gotten a wrist band to the show had her mother call the fire department and say the place was oversold...thats why they had to have the show outside and not inside, and this did not please the band or the fans...but on the show went.
The dynamic duo opened with new single "A Decade Under The Influence" to start the nice crowd sing-along. After the song Adam noted that "we're totally playing next to a dumpster." I guess being number 3 on the billboard charts will only take you so far.
The 2 then asked the audience what they wanted to hear, and a myraid of responses were yelled out (I screamed for Bonus Mosh and You're So Last Summer), but Fred wanted to play new stuff, so the they lit into "This Photograph Is Proof". After that Adam turned to the crowd again and chose "New American Classic" from some girl who yelled it out...good stuff. After that they were told they had time for 2 more, so it was time for "Cute Without The E" which of course prompted a very loud sing-along. Adam then asked the crowd for last requests, and someone said "Theres No I In Team", but Adam claimed that that song would not sound very cool with one acoustic guitar for 3 minutes, so then taking the choice into his own hands, Adam borrowed Fred's guitar and played rarity "Your Own Disaster" by his lonesome. The crowd chanted for ONE MORE SONG, but they had to go in for the signing portion.
This was an AWESOME experience, and if you ever get a chance to see any band like this in a small intimate setting do so...Especially when a band is about to break big...you might never get these opportunities again...today next to a dumpster in a parking lot in New Jersey, and tomorrow Giants Stadium...well maybe not Giants Stadium, but you get the point.
After the show, I swiped one of the posters from the wall right behind the stage to get signed, which I did after waiting in line in the sun for another half hour...When I got in, I talked to Fred briefly about where he lives in PA, got a picture with him and Adam, and helped Matt figure out and sing the lyrics to Spider-Man's theme song. Really nice guys overall, for the minute or so I got to talk to them. I would have more pictures to post, but I bought Dinacell batteries from the dollar store, and they died, so I only got 2 pictures...some of the kids in line though said they'd e-mail me theres, so heres hoping.

    Warped Tour Wrap-Up
    Justin, 8/7/2004 12:44:47 AM
Ah how quickly time goes...The Warped Tour has come and gone, and with it a little piece of all of us...I'll try and get through everything without going into TOO MUCH detail, as a few others will post on the day I think.
The day kicked off at 10:45am as Joe arrived here, and me, him, Mike Peters, and Justin Shaffer (2 pairs of Mike and Justins!) set off to pick up Mike and then some bagels...then it was to I-95. We arrived in Philly around 11:35 to take the ferry, but noticed a huge line, so a group vote was cast on whether or not to take the ferry, or take Joe's suggestion on driving into Jersey, which he guaranteed would take us only 15 minutes. Everyone sat and stared at me like I had 2 heads, so we drove to Jersey.
An hour later we were sitting in traffic behind a bus of kids going to the Aquarium giving us gang hand signs. As we drove through Camden, we enjoyed playing music loudly, and everyone else seemed to enjoy me screaming various things at various passersby, including "the girl in the yellow shirt."
Once we paid the 20 dollar parking fee we were finally there. We entered the venue around 1:15 and checked things out, going to various booths, and me and joe bought guitar yards full of alcohol. Then we finally saw some bands.
1:50---Rufio took the Maurice Stage located on the Tweeter Center Main Stage and played a nice rocking set. Afterwards Me, Mike, Peters, and Shaffer decided to head down to the floor for Matchbook Romance while Joe lounged with his feet up, reading the Warped Tour Program.
2:50---Matchbook Romance took the stage and immediately started rocking...LOUDLY...so loudly in fact I had to put some balled up paper in my ears so I wouldn't go deaf, as we were right in front of the speakers...then I decided to just move over and pushed my way to the front center. Matchbook Romance=Impressed Justin, wouldn't mind hearing some more. After their set, the other 3 joined me up front so we could enjoy...
3:50---Allister, our personal heroes blasted right into Radio to get the crowd going, along with Scratch and a quick None Of My Friends Are Punks. Crowd surfers increased all throughout the set, and I got to get kicked in the face. Our buddies in Allister never disappoint, and I think they won some new fans over by the end of the show. Somewhere In Fullerton made a surprise mid-set showing and Racecars and Overrated finished the proceedings. Then after the set Allister's guitarist Mike was kind enough to see me calling to him and gave me his setlist, which I offered to Mike (Mattozzi)...then Allister's roadie threw another one to the crowd that I caught anyway (fighting off a drunkenly stumbling girl who forced her way next to us and then hung over the railing flailing about...she then claimed the drummer was her boyfriend and when I asked what his name was, she did not know.)

4:30---Sugarcult hit the main stage as we grabbed a spot near the back after walking over from the Maurice Stage area and put on a set we couldn't really enjoy due to the distance (a trend that woiuld continue)..highlights included Memory (which Mike could then not get out of his head) and of course Bouncing off The Walls Again.

5:30---After Sugarcult me, Mike, Mike, and Justin headed off for some food while Joe decided to head to the front of the stage and get a good spot for Bad Religion...we came back in time to catch only a few songs from afar, so I'll let Joe comment more on them later.

6:30---We then traded a whole NoFx performance in exchange for good spots for Coheed And Cambria's set..we were directly stage left with a great view of wild haired singer Claudio Sanchez, who completely rocked the house during Coheed's tragically short set, as you only get a half hour on Warped Tour to wow the crowd...Coheed pumped out 5 songs, including awesome opener/crowd chant-along "In Keeping Secrets With Silent Earth:3", single "A Favor House Atlantic", and cowbell accompanied "Faint Of Heart", plus 2 songs from the first album...During this set I also battled an Amazonian bitch with a cigarette to protect two tiny girls trying to inch their way up for Yellowcard later.

7:00---Newfound Glory jumped on the other main stage after C&C but we were too far away to even try to get close, so we watched from afar with the sun in our eyes. NFG played the usual except they had a guest keyboardist from Reggie And The Full Effect accompanying them. At this point we decided we were sick of the main stage crowd and decided to go catch Hidden In Plain View's set instead of Yellowcard and ditched NFG during closer "All Downhill From Here".

7:30---HIPV played a SCORCHING set on the SmartPunk.com stage, doing "Belly Full Of Kerosene" just as we walked over along with "The Chaser", a song off their forthcoming album, and then one of my all-time favorite songs "Twenty Below." Then Timmy from Allister joined the band on guitar for a set closing "Shamans Witches Magic"...if you get a chance to see these guys, do so...energy energy energy...these guys look really happy to be doing what they're doing, and are pretty nice guys (I talked to the guitarist at the booth and bought my t-shirt from him).

8:00---We then had to walk very quickly back to the mainstages to see Taking Back Sunday, and Peters and Shaffer got seperated from us, so some cell phone hijinx insued. While they were finding us, I decided I could not stand idly by and watch TBS from the back, so I gave Joe and Mike my possessions and headed into the point break of the crowd. Using cover of crowd surfers I had maneuvered myself to the front by the time TBS restarted their opener "You Know How I Do"(!) (they had stopped to calm the insane crowd because people had gotten knocked over because of people like me pushing forward)...I stood in front of guitarist Fred as the crowd surfers came fast and furious overhead and TBS rocked too the tune of 3 tunes off the new album (Bonus Mosh, Phasers, & Decade Under The Influence) and 5 cuts from Tell All Your Friends (Timberwolves @ NJ, Great Romances, So Last Summer...)and of course wicked closer Cut From The Team. From where I was the whole performance was just blow away awesome (don't know what the crowd looked like from the back)...but can be summed up in one moment...During Cut when the crowd sing back happened and the band stopped for the big "Why can't I feel anything from anyone other than you" line...time just seemed to stand still and then came crashing back down all at once with guitars and people screaming alike. This is a great band.
After they finished playing I saw something flying towards me from the stage and caught it to discover it was a soaking wet Slim Jim towel, so I gave it to some girl. Then a drum stick came out that the guy in front of me got...then a set list came flying that landed on the ground..some kid picked it up, looked at it, said what the hell is this, looked confused, then I asked for it and he gave it to me. I wobbled back to the others who were shocked I had made it all the way in.

8:30---Thursday took the stage, and we watched from off to the back and left side and could barely see...They sounded good, but I was too far to pay much attention.

9:10---As we left the venue exhausted, we passed Scotty from Allister lounging underneath a tree and complimented his kickin' set to end the day in a most fitting of ways. Then we had to drive out of New Jersey and Joe drove down a closed street we told him not to go down. The end.
Look for other viewpoints, and if we are lucky, the J.GO story of the day...

First of all, how could you skip Yellowcard??!!?!

Ok so heres my hellish story which almost rivals Mike's disaster from NY's warped last year.

Eug, Tammy and I set out from KoP at 11am with dreams of getting to Camden a little after the start. The trip got off to a bad start with bumper to bumper on 76E which took way too long.

Eventually we get to Camden after hearing on Y-100 that its sold out, we decide to take our chances. We inch our way up to the waterfront for about an hour and I let Eug and Tammy out to go find tickets. I'm just circling my way around Camden, not knowing where I am going. Cops are directing me in all kinds of directions but luckily I dont park. Trying to call Eug and Tammy was almost impossible since all the kiddies were jamming up the system. Eventually I find them and learn that the concert is sold out and scalpers want $100 a ticket. F-that! So we sold off Mike's ticket to some kid (as Eyg about this). We got $40.... not bad. After that, we hauled ass outta there.

Lessons learned. You must buy tickets in advance for warped. Its too popular now.

Hey this is Peters, I went with the 2 Justins, a fellow Mike, and Joe to the WT in Camden, but I also went to the one in Hershey with my friend Christine. It's hard to say which I enjoyed more, because Hershey was more chill, but the sound quality of the bands on the two main stages was mediocre compared to Camden. On the other hand, the crowd at Camden was more involved and energized, but at the same time you had to turn around every couple seconds to make sure that a crowd surfer wasn't about to get thrown on top of your head for the fiftieth time.

Sorry if this is too blunt:

New Found Glory sounded like absolute shit at Hershey. The lead singer announced to the crowd, "I just woke up 20 minutes ago," and it showed. They most likely played the same exact set as in Camden, but I didn't pay too much attention after the fact that the lead singer could barely sing most of the lyrics, so he had the crowd sing for him (which they they did so poorly, if at all). The dude from Reggie and the Full Effect played the keyboards at both shows, whatever. They rocked Camden a lot harder, period.

Coheed & Cambria was once again awesome. Their set at Hershey was the same as Camden except they substituted "The Faint of Heart" for "Blood Red Summer." The 2 songs from their first album that they played were "Devil in Jersey City" and "Everything Evil." For both shows close to the end of "D in JC" they broke into "So Lonely" by the Police and confused the shit out of the whole crowd. I found it to be an interesting twist, and def. enjoyed it. My only complaint is that they didn't play my personal favorites: "The Crowing," "Backend of Forever," "Delirium Trigger," and "Neverender." My only other complaint is about the stupid drunk chick in Camden wearing the red shirt that stood on the railing and yelled "If you're not here for Coheed, get the fuck out." Five minutes later her bitch ass was seen crowd surfing like the asshole that she truly is. I hope you fell on your head.

My biggest disappointment of the WT was Taking Back Sunday. I saw them back on May 26th at Hershey, and they were awesome. They played the first 3 songs off their new album, but I wasn't impressed. Now I really enjoy those 3 songs, but I still wasn't impressed when they played them, and I wasn't really impressed in general. They seem to get worse every time I see them. Maybe I'm just too hard on them because I like them so much, and maybe I'm too demanding and expect them to sing every lyric to every song (but that's just me, sing the song the way it was written, or don't sing it at all). Needless to say, I really didn't pay too much attention to their set at Hershey. I was preoccupied with trying to find the stage that The Matches were playing on, to no avail. My fav. part of TBS's show at Hershey was right in the beginning when Adam told the crowd to back up 3 feet, stop crowding/pushing the people in the front, and best of all that if they crowd surf they're assholes cause there are like 8 rows of peoples' heads that they are gonna land on top of. Finally someone told off those bastards, and it worked too, they stopped surfing. I liked how everyone and their mom sang along with them in Camden! I sat in the stands at Hershey, so no one was singing.

    OK...Quick Reviews of Camden:
Both Rufio and Matchbook Romance were awesome. It was my first time seeing either of them in concert and my first time ever hearing Rufio.
I also thought that Hidden in Plain View and Thursday put on good shows as well. I was too far away from Thursday to really see what was goin on, but they sounded great and it makes me wanna actually listen to War All the Time more then once in its entirety. As for Hidden in Plain View they def. rocked the small but energetic crowd that came out to watch them. It was my first time to ever hear them as well.
Now I know everyone is gonna hate me for this one...but...I really wasn't impressed with Allister. Maybe I'll have to listen to them more or something to get into them. I was more concerned that the drunk girl that was standing in front of me didn't throw up on my hand as it gripped onto the railing, as I let the crowd surfers fall onto her head and clotheline her neck off of my knuckles and the railing.

    Quick Review of Hershey:
Fall Out Boy was the last band I saw, and they put on the best show (sorry Coheed). At times the whole crowd sang parts of the chorus and it just sounded absolutely awesome. The only bad thing about thier show was that the stage was way too small (they def. deserved to play on the main stage).
I also enjoyed a band called From First to Last, they were pretty damn heavy and 3 of the guys sang different parts of the songs which I liked. I even think Scottie from Allister was up on stage singing with them for one song (though rumor has it he went to Hershey Park after Allisters set).
Christine and I also checked out Halifax, and she liked them so much that she bought their CD. I thought they were pretty decent as well.
I was intrigued by Avenged Sevenfold cause I've seen shit about them all over some magazines and stuff, so we checked them out for about 2 songs, got tired of them and then left.
The International Noise Conspiracty from Sweden wasn't too bad. I felt bad for them cause they played after Story of the Year and most of the crowd had left.
Oh yea, and Story of the Year wasn't too bad, they really got the crowd off their feet and into their set.
Just like in Camden, Bad Religion preached some shit about not voting for Bush. Whatever, I really didn't care for their music. You're musicians, play your fucking music and leave the politcs to politicians. I go to a concert to listen to music, not listen to some dude with a microphone preach about voting instead of singing.

...also Sugarcult and Yellowcard were good but I didn't really listen to enough of their sets to really have an opinion.

    that's it...
  • From Joe on 8/11/2004:
My thoughts on the Warped Tour:

Too many little kids. Too many FAT KIDS crowd surfing over my average body frame. Too many trailer park tenants not wearing shirts. Now on to the music.

Due to a long line for the ferry AND a horrible back-up on the Jersey side of the Walt Whitman I missed Avenged Sevenfold. Sigh. Rufio played well, however, I would have liked to have heard "Like A Prayer". The band between Rufio & Matchbook Romance sucked, and the lead singer should invest in a bra next time she wants to jump around stage for 30 minutes. Matchbook Romance rocked hard, so hard that the girl in front of me broke her chair as the crowd piled on to her. The band that played next (I can't remember their name, but Justin does) put on an awesome set. The lead singer was a sweaty ball of energy that never stopped rocking. I'll pick up their new cd when Justin tells me their name for the third time. Allister. By this point I had left the seated area and plastered myself on the front guardrail. Great set, got a good picture of Tim rocking his gee-tar that can be found on the warped pics page. Next, we moved to the parking lot main stage area. Why the main stage was a side stage and the parking lot was the main stage I'll never know. New Jersey, go figure. Walked past Tiger Army, decided not to watch their set. Not really into the rock-a-billy/horror punk sound. If they went straight horror-punk I would likey likey. Watched some of Sugarcult, at this point I should have gone and purchased a hot dog, but I stuck with the group. After Sugarcult, the group went for snacks as I plowed my way to the front of the Bad Religion crowd. Pussies. Let me state my opinion on Bad Religion as they relate to popular music, BR is not an acquired taste. If you're not infected the first time you hear them, you will never get into them. There is a place for politics in music and Bad Religion is that place, they're not part of this polirock fad that's going on. Sidenote: I figured out halfway through the set that I was surrounded by 15 year old Coheed fangirls, that were cock-blocking my Bad Religion Rock-out session. Aside from all the lame-o's their set was excellent. They played songs both old & new, I would liked to have heard "Struck A Nerve" and "Kyoto Now" but I gladly settled for "Generator" and "American Jesus". The group rejoins me now to get a spot for Coheed and Cambria. Solid set, I like their sound and the concept. I do not like sweaty fat girls putting smelly bodily fluids on my dry shirt. After that fiasco, we soaked in a good 10 minutes of a sub-par NFG set. Yellowcard or Hidden In PLain View? Yellowcard or Hidden In Plain View? Hidden In Plain View! These New Jersey natives rocked their home state. Full of energy (although that might be attributed to the can after can of Monster Energy Drink that was being guzzled during and in between songs). This was my second time seeing them and they were even better than before. Three cheers for HIPV! After this we lost a pair of Mike & Justin's, not sure which pair though. I was a tiny bit intoxicated from the inhalation of fat chick sweat during Coheed. (Yes, I'm still bitter!) At this point Lemiwinks sets out on his journey to get to the front of the crowd. 30 minutes after an entertaining performance we are relieved to see that Justin is in one piece and holding on to a TBS set list. Kudos. Thursday close the show. Decent set interupted by a phone call from my wacky asian common-law-mother-in-law who needs a ride home from North Brunswick. I am unable to oblige and set up a pick-up time for the following day. I return to the set and watch in amusement as a drunk girl begs Justin for a cigarette, five minutes after he has already explained he doesn't have one she staggers away.

On the way out of the venue/parking lot we notice a certain musician who apperas on the page with Mike and Justin sitting on the ground like a homeless man (not a hobo though, because homeless people walk the streets while hobo's ride trains). Uncommonly placid reaction from Justin, who I believe was still recovering from Taking On Friday a Taking Back Sunday crowd. We get into the car and head towards PA. And I'm proud to say the I have a friend in Pennsylvania. I am able to prove finally that it only takes 15 minutes to get from Penn's Landing to the Camden Waterfront.

I'm Ron Burgandy. Go fuck yourself, San Diego!
  • From Mike on 8/11/2004:
I'd just like to add that Thursday is a really kickass band that played to a weakened and diminished crowd in Camden. Check out War All the Time at your local library for a rewarding listening experience.

    UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF WWSG!
    Justin, 8/5/2004 11:22:24 AM
Some mysteries over the past millennium or 2 have astounded historians and the masses more than others...run of the mill stuff like who shot JFK...what happened to Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart...the parting of the red sea...and so on and so forth...but WWSG is the site that dissects pop culture minutia...so heres the TOP 10 UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF WHATWESAYGOES.COM....Well actually just the first 5, Mike's half will be posted later on. Now without further ado...

5.What the hell does the M. in M. Bison from Street Fighter 2 stand for?

4.Who the fuck greenlit Timeline, The Chronicles Of Riddick, and Riding In Cars With Boys?

3.How does Conan O' Brien's hair exist within the context of gravitational forces? Shouldn't be possible...my theory? Witchery.

    2.Rivers Cuomo.

1.What exactly is the true identity of Buckethead? ...The world may never know.
  • From Steve on 8/8/2004:
    to answer questions #5:
in the original street fighter in japan, m. bison and balrag have switched names. we all know balrag to be the large black boxer and the "m. bison" name was a parody after mike tyson. to avoid any bad publicity, the names were changed in the u.s. version.

i have no idea how i know that.
  • From fifreak on 8/9/2004:
    I second the M.Bison thing.
  • From Justin on 8/9/2004:
Wow...I was never expecting you to say that...guess a new 5th mystery will have to be posted...once Mike puts his up.

Just One More Day To Warped...
    Justin, 8/5/2004 02:21:55 AM
The time is almost at hand...Warped Tour is nearly here...And I was checking Newfound Glory's website tonight in preparation, I came upon this bit on todays show in Bristow, VA...

    From the Band:
"During New Found Glory's set today at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA, two fans were seriously injured.

The thoughts and prayers of the band are with those two fans and their families, and they wish them a speedy recovery."

    A Fans take:
"They actually were both bad injuries.....one girl was dropped on her head while crowd surfing (the ground was a gravel parking lot) and the other was kind of strange....a large gust of wind knocked over a fence, and it landed on somebody. (Ian went to check them out, said they werent breathing. I believe the 2nd person was airlifted out.) On another note, a fan was also hurt crowd surfing during Yellowcard, which was the set after NFG. I was about 5 feet from her when she fell, straight onto her back. The security seemed to think she would be ok."

Well that just serves as warning...I myself had my biggest concert scare 2 years ago at Warped as NFG took the stage and I was very nearly knocked over and trampled by the crowd if some concerned fellow concertgoers hadn't have pulled me up. If some of us indeed don't make it back from the show Friday, this message is for Brian M. Davis...carry on the hallowed tradition of this great website. Its all up to you.
For the people about to make this journey with us...Remember your training...and we'll see you on the beach.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    Justin, 8/5/2004 02:15:39 AM
The rumors, it seems are true, as Aqua Teen Hunger Force's final episode ever will air in a one night only special event on cartoon network. Tune in midnight at August 15th to catch it, and if you haven't already, pick up the DVD's you won't regret it...funny, bizarre, original, and just plain cool...Lets have a moment of silence for the ATHF.
  • From Justin on 8/5/2004:
Well according to TV Tome August 15 is just the day the new season of ATHF starts...so I'm confused now based on this news and the commercial I saw on cartoon network...tune in that night anyways, cause any new episode is a treat.
