Soundtracking
Justin, 7/26/2005 11:34:59 PM
So me and Connie Chung popped down to the Philadelphia Free Library to take in a book reading from Chuck Klosterman earlier this evening. Klosterman is of course the Spin Magazine writer responsible for the books "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs", and the brand new masterpiece Mike and I can't put down; "Killing Yourself To Live:85% Of A True Story".
Klosterman was fairly hilarious in his reading a chapter from the new one, telling a couple stories about the making of the book and answering a Q and A session from the crowd. His books mostly combine his love of music and pop culture, and relate them back to his everyday existence on this rock we live in. In talking about his new book, he used a soundtrack to describe it, and how music people listen too become more important to them as they hear it relating to specific situations they experience. Thus it becomes the soundtrack to their life. This struck me as very interesting, and I asked him what songs he would use to make a soundtrack to this book. As the main plot sees him going to different sites of rock stars deaths, he proposed he would use mostly songs from the bands he visited (a Sex Pistols song, Lynyrd Skynyrds "Gimme 3 Steps, a Buddy Holly song, etc. etc.)
Then I got to thinking as I do, what would my soundtrack sound like? I mean with my bizarro memory I can specifically remember 3 different instances of listening to Fallout Boy's "Take This To Your Grave" (driving down to Baltimore for the Weekend Of Insanity with Jgo, driving around lost in Delaware on Halloween, and going the entire length of Broad Street on my way to a Phillies - Braves game.) I remember I listened to Taking Back Sunday's "Where You Want To Be" on the morning I drove to Gate 1 Travel to work for the first time and also the morning I drove to Gate 1 Travel the day I got fired.
I distinctly recall jamming to "Nuthin But A G Thang" while returning from Six Flags in the year 2000 going through Pennsauken, NJ.
I got into car accidents while listening to Rob Zombie's "Dragula", and Jimmy Eat World's "Work". And so on and so forth. Name a pop song that came out in the past ten years and I'm sure I can attach it to some situation I was in. But what will the future bring?
In Klosterman's new book he raises the question (although previously raised by Elizabeth Wurtzel) what song would you listen too if you were committing suicide? And that is a damn good question. I mean I wouldn't want it to be something derivitive or expected like Nirvana or Dashboard Confessional. I'd at least want something where people would be like...wtf was he thinking? And so I ask the following...In these soundtrack situations, what songs would you choose for your own personal mix?

1.Next song to play when your making out with someone?

2.What song should be playing next time your eating ribs?

3.The song that would play while your drinking yourself into a blind stupor would be?

4.If you had a theme song to be played every time you entered a room what would it be?

5.Say you could telepathically insert a song into your ex's head to be played on constant repeat...what song would you stick in there?

6.The song that is constantly playing in your head while you dream at night is...?

7.You just won the Superbowl/Hot Dog Eating Contest/Lottery/something else where you triumph...the celebratory song is?

8.You just met the man/woman of your dreams. What song suddenly comes on (ala Dream Weaver in Wayne's World. Your song CANNOT be Dream Weaver however.)

9.Lets throw the suicide song in too? What song do you play? Chuck noted he probably would play The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows", but that he probably could not bleed to death in a minute and 56 seconds.

10.And finally at Mike's Suggestion, what song do you play when your team loses the World Series? (I'll also open it up to after your team has been knocked out of Playoff contention officially, or for you Football fans, when your team ...lets say the Eagles, lose the Super Bowl. What song did you guys play in January?)

Feel free to post your picks. I probably will at some point. Probably tomorrow. Probably.

just a thought, although u trivia oriented types probably already know, lots of serial killers are discovered with Catcher and the Rye; and while i do like music, i also associate specific books i'm reading with certain situations in my life, especially if themes in the story coincide with themes in my life

Big news on the DVD front for this fall...
    from IGN:
July 15, 2005 - In the first of IGN's exclusive Video Blogs direct from San Diego's Comic-Con International, voice actor Billy West (Fry, Zoidberg, the Professor, and many more voices for many more shows) revealed to us that a brand-new direct-to-video Futurama movie has been greenlit. Not only that, but there is also an option for a second movie as well.

    also!:
Disney has set November 15 for the release of Scrubs: Season 2. Of course the date isn't final until Disney announces it officially, so stay tuned.
    Plus:
    The OC Season 2 - August 23
    Arrested Development Season 2 - October 11
Beavis And Butthead Volume 1 - November 8
    Friends Season 10 - November 15

    And none TV Show DVDS!:
Sin City - August 16 (WITH 4 DIFFERENT COVERS!)
    Fever Pitch - September 13

That is all...there are no other good movies coming out on DVD for awhile.

    Dream Cast
    Justin, 7/19/2005 09:00:23 PM
If you're a Hollywood Director and you have creative control over 5 casting choices for your movie, who do you pick?

    My 5:
    1.Charlie Sheen
    2.Natalie Portman
    3.Dave Chappelle
    4.Pro Wrestler Chris Jericho
    5.Zooey Deschanel
  • From Joe on 7/21/2005:
Charlie Sheen? Maybe if I were casting a film in 1987, but honestly, he's a horrible actor. Have you ever seen The Arrival? Charlie Sheen with thick framed glasses, a goatee AND no shirt is far more frightening than any aliens could be. Anyway, here are my five:

    1. Robert DeNiro - chew that scenery baby!
    2. Billy Connolly - he'll make a man out of you yet lads.
    3. Cate Blanchett - best actress in the world.
4 & 5. Paul Hogan & Hulk Hogan - but only if I were doing a remake of Twins.
  • From Mike on 7/23/2005:
The Arrival was a pretty craptastic movie. I can only imagine what the Arrival 2 was like. Here's my five:

    1. Johnny Depp
    2. Tchéky Karyo
    3. Kristin Kreuk
    4. Michael Madsen
    5. Sarah Silverman

God only knows what kind of movie it would be...
  • From fifreak on 7/27/2005:
    I liked the Arrival.

    Do you value your freedoms?
    Mike, 7/19/2005 05:09:20 PM
For all those who do, Bush is announcing his Supreme court pick tonight at 9. It's the opinion of this humble poster that he will choose a "moderate" since most of his political capital has already been spent (depending on who you ask) and he has enough egg on his face from Karl Rove. On the other hand, a controversial pick would take up all the news coverage and distract people completely from that Karl guy's misdeeds. Not that it matters, because this Valerie Plame game has been popping up consistently for the last 2 years. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, except to say that in November 2006, I hope America's had enough of this garbage.

Why I shouldn't be allowed to read and some other things I felt like typing.
    Justin, 7/17/2005 02:43:37 AM
I used to read a lot when I was younger. Then for awhile nothing happened. Now I have started again lately. One of the reasons I didn't read so much before is that usually when I start reading a book I couldn't really stop until I was finished. This meant staying up until oh lets say 3 or 4 am, just reading. And then most of the time I can't go to sleep but I also can't continue reading because my eyes start to bug me. Maybe the solution is glasses and sleeping pills. Then again I find sleep to be overrated and a big waste of time. I mean I could be up doing something like finishing my book. Or out in Atlantic City hitting the craps tables with Brian M. Davis to celebrate T.W.'s birthday...Happy birthday props by the way T.W. pictures from his bday celebration at the Phillies game will be posted eventually.
Furthermore I have to work tomorrow, so when I actually DO go to sleep I'm only guaranteed a set number of hours with which to rest. But I digress.
So we saw Charlie And The Chocolate Factory today on the IMAX screen at King Of Prussia and it was sheer brilliance (review to come this week along with THE WEDDING CRASHERS!!!!!) and I stand in awe of Johnny Depp's acting prowess. Truly a man at the top of his craft. Also watched the Bill Murray classic What About Bob on TBS again a little while ago...also a powerful force in the acting game. In that spirit heres ten other movies featuring the two best actors in America. (besides Will Ferrell of course)

    JD:
    1.Donnie Brasco
2.Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
    3.Sleepy Hollow
4.Once Upon A Time In Mexico
5.Pirates Of The Caribbean:The Curse Of The Black Pearl

    BM
    1.Caddyshack
    2.Kingpin
    3.Charlie's Angels
    4.Lost In Translation
5.The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

Offbeat News...A New Feature to this corner of the internet.
    Justin, 7/14/2005 03:51:56 PM
Mike and I have been discussing a lot of offbeat news lately, and it seems like reading it is the highlight of Mike's day from what I can tell. Like our recent discussion about the finding of the murderweapon (an icepick) of communist Leon Trotsky. So in an effort to entertain Mike and all you readers out there, I'm introducing a new feature...links to off beat news from around the globe!
Heres the first story, an inspirational piece...I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I can think of no story more offbeat and fitting for this very website.

    Mix N Match
    Justin, 7/14/2005 12:21:04 AM
So I'm dying to use this useless Ice Cream Sandwich maker I foolishly picked up at Williams Sonoma a couple weeks back, coerced by Joe Wills continually saying, "come on, you'd be stupid not to get it." to me in the store...but the problem is I don't feel like baking the damn chocolate chip cookies and no one seems to want to do it for me.
So with this laziness coursing through my veins I decide on a simpler snack, some Cinnamon Life Cereal. Now while eating this (milklessly, there never seems to be milk available in my fridge) I begin to think...maybe I should just mix these with some ice cream. I mean Ice Cream is pretty much milk right? I bet that would taste pretty good! And why stop there? Why not Captain Crunch or Cookie Crisp or Count Chocula or another combination of double C'ed sugary cereals!?!?! Ah fuck it, I'm on this one, I'm going to go mix up a batch. More to come.
  • From Justin on 7/14/2005:
So I mixed some French Vanilla Ice Cream with the Cinnamon Life, and it was pretty good, but the French Vanilla was a little rich and overpowering. Gotta get some plain Vanilla for the next concoction...
  • From Mike on 7/14/2005:
What a sordid, scandalous life you lead... what about Crunchberries?
  • From Justin on 7/14/2005:
I'm gonna be honest with ya man...I hate crunchberries. But if I can find some Nintendo Power cereal, I'll get all over that.

    For our more frugal members...

We got some hot deals here:

    http://baltimore.craigslist.org/fur/84056399.html

    http://baltimore.craigslist.org/fur/84060907.html

    Interesting trades will be considered...

On a related note, I'll be moving out of my place come the weekend before August 1st so this website may be experiencing some downtime. If this creates a problem for you, I would suggest seeking professional help or just breathing into a paper bag. The idea of anyone even noticing the website is down would be pretty thrilling to me...

We are back from the midwest.
    Mike, 7/5/2005 10:50:31 PM
    That is all.
  • From Justin on 7/6/2005:
Whew. What a trip. Anything I post here can't possibly do it justice. I would really rather see BMD's version of it posted.
Suffice to say, a bizarre and great time was had by all...we at least me and Mike. Although BMD did admit to me that he had a lot of fun, and thats why we were doing it, so HE COULD HAVE FUN!
The mission statements that were also completed below by the end of the jaunt were
    #'s 3
5 (We drove past a sign for it, Mike did not put his feet on the ground though)
6 (Ohio, never made it to West Virginia)...
that is all. Oddly enough we never actually went to a CD shop or Video store, although we did spend the better part of an hour searching for one at the University Of Michigan when we went to lunch there...We found it as we were driving out of town. I did get to go to the SafeSex shop instead though. If your in the area, I highly reccommend it and the bomb ass hotty that was working there. I don't know what else to say about our most excellent adventure...Hopefully we will be able to post the pictures and logs soon and BMD or Mike will post some of their thoughts...and if you guys out there are really really lucky, RJ might post about his self professed "Weekend for the ages" he had in Boston.
    Its a celebration bitches.

    Off The Grid
    Justin, 7/1/2005 11:38:08 AM
Wellllllllllllllllllllllll as many of you may or may not know, us wwsg overlords will be headed on a little 4th of July weekend Road Trip with Brian M. Davis to his house in Michigan, Chicago, and Parts Unknown. Mike and I wanted to issue the a mission statement for said journey, and also let everyone know to keep checking back for road updates, pictures, or announcements that BMD has indeed reached one stick of butter (or higher if I get my way). So without further ado...

Mid-West United States Road Trip Goals
1.Attend the Taste Of Chicago festival in Grant Park and gorge ourselves.

2.Make it through the Cubs game without falling asleep

3.Eat at Olga's Kitchen in a mall in Michigan somewhere

4.See the Leather Museum of Chicago

5.Mike would like to see Kalamazoo, hes always dreamed of putting his feet down there.

6.Hopefully get out of the car in Ohio, Indiana, and if we're lucky West Virginia.

7.Get to at least one Video store or CD shop I've never been too before and never will go to again.

8.If your a good looking lady in Chi-Town and you want to meet up with me at a bar and buy me a drink, I would not be opposed.

    9.Make out with Davis's mom.

10.Well I can't reveal all our plans, if I did, the post later would be boring.

Thats about it...So until we get back have a great holiday weekend, and don't forget to cast your vote for the Queen Of Summer. Only you can decide who will reign as the hottest.
  • From Mike on 7/3/2005:
We are in East Grand Rapids right now and let me list which of these Mission Statement points has come to pass:

    #1
    #2, minus 9th inning
    #6 only in Indiana

    That is all.
