London Calling
Mike, 5/30/2006 06:00:44 PM
Ahlo! Just want to let the fives of readers of this site know that everything is going well in London. I've managed to hit most of the important sites and have taken 3 very entertaining walking tours. If you go, I would recommend hitting up the London Walks tours as they are a very fun way to see parts of the city you wouldn't normally encounter. Also, I'm staying in the most hilariously modern looking hotel. It looks like an uber-trendy bar... awash in bizarre glowing light, strange statues, and techno music. Hope all is going well in the States without me. Cheerio!

Out of respect to Miguel because he hasn't seen the picture yet, I won't reveal any of the (many) plot points that angered me beyond all reason here. For that you can hit up my Myspace blog.
But suffice to say it was a real heartbreaker.
And man...5 theaters all at once played the movie starting at 12:01 AM...They all let out simeultaneously, and I have to say that I've never seen that many crestfallen fanboy faces at the same time....Well maybe when Superman died. But this was a real abortion. sigh.

Wow. I am glad I played 5 hours of NBA street instead of seeing that movie...
I gotta say, I enjoyed X-Men 3, comic be damned. Maybe the whole X-Men mythology would have been better as a 12 issue limited series rather than 43 years of entagled, non-sensical crossover and reovered plot lines.
Without getting into all the spoilers, I thought there were a lot of gutsy calls made which, in the end, made it a far more interesting and entertaining movie than X-Men 1 & 2. Instead of trying to present a bastardized and abridged version of an X-Men storyline, Brent Ratman just went balls out and put together something in the spirit of any alternate X-Men graphic novel (of which there are 18 million published). Then again, maybe he should have just left the whole Phoenix thing alone. The movie would have been 1000 times better with the Mee'kron crystal.

Trading in futures...
RJ, 5/24/2006 10:06:52 AM
How would legislation requiring all publically traded companies be traded solely in futures affect the decision-making of both management and
investors?
The institution of the publicly traded company has been criticized for encouraging inherently myopic behavior. Salaries, bonuses, and at the very least stock options are often directly tied to reaching particular stock price, revenue or profit targets. Yet In the long run, actions that might temporarily increase stock price, revenues or profits--such as misstating profits or winning a large contract unlikely to be successfully
executed-- may prove to have a net effect that is quite disastrous, though only after several years. Enron's decision to inflate it's holdings may be somewhat atypical, however EDS' bid for the Navy Internet, or the SAIC fiasco at FBI are perhaps more realistic of the typical. Similarly, strategic investments that are costly over 2-3 years, but which might greatly enhance market
share, revenue etc. after several years may not be viewed as favorably.
Would limiting trade to futures force investors--and therefore executive leadership-- to focus more on strategic opportunities and growth? And if so, would this result in changes (for good or bad) in business direction and management quality at lower levels of a corporation? Would such behavior force companies to provide greater transparency out of fear that a significant accounting scandal might have long term affects on stock prices?

There's this commercial on these days that says that Cingular Wireless has fewer dropped calls than any other wireless company in the nation. I haven't heard such a big load of crap since Bush got reelected! I have Cingular and I have a minimum of one dropped call a day, sometimes two or three. I don't even talk on the phone that much! I probably only talk an hour a day or less. Maybe it's my phone? I just got a new phone a couple months ago! In conclusion, if you're looking for a new cell phone plan, pass on a Cingular. Rollover minutes? They should call them bend over minutes!
Of the following, which correctly identifies a flaw in Mike's argument that Cingular's rollover minutes are not a good value?
A: Mike attacks his opponent by suggesting that which is necessary cannot exist without the sufficent clause.
B: Mike appeals to authority as the basis for his argument that one who is looking for a new cell phone plan should pass on Cingular.
C: Mike overlooks the possibility that Cingular has the most dropped calls.
D: Mike makes a personal attack against Cingular, rather than focusing on Cingular's argument.
E: Mike is inconsistent in his use of the term "Rollover."

Top Ten Reasons The Summer Of Ought 6 Will Rock Your Socks
Justin, 5/12/2006 01:11:51 PM
1.Dashboard Confessional - Dusk And Summer - 6/27... After a 3 year abscence Chris Carrabba finally reunites the emo army for a new studio album! And judging from the new single I can say that this will probably be my Summer Soundtrack.
2.It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia... The straight up just wrong laughfest returns to FX with Danny Devito in tow on 6/29 at 10:00 PM...be there or be ridiculed.
3.Bastards Of Young DVD ...Out on 6/6 this documentary features interviews and live performances that showcase the current punk rock scene. Bands like Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate, Midtown, Thursday, The Starting Line, and many more are all chronicled here. Plus the DVD release event is being held at Vintage Vinyl where Midtown and Thursday will be performing! How neat-o is that?
4.Queen Of Summer Poll ...The annual friggin tradition that takes place right here every summer! What are you waiting for? Vote now!
5.Marvel Legends Series 14 ...Shipping in August, this set will feature Psylocke (finally!), Longshot, Iron Man, Falcon, and Baron Zemo...plus pieces to put together your very own MOJO action figure. A dream come true.
6.Summer Concert Tours ...What else is there to say? Every summer since 2001 its been an seasonal event for me to catch Reel Big Fish on their Coast To Coast Roasts, and this time they'll be joined up by MxPx! Some others I'll probably check out:
Pearl Jam - 5/27 - Tweeter Center
Brand New - 6/21 - TLA
Taking Back Sunday - 6/22 - Six Flags Great Adventure
Reel Big Fish/MxPx - 7/14 - Electric Factory
Bon Jovi - 7/29 - Giants Stadium
Dashboard Confessional/Say Anything - 8/12 - Radio City Music Hall
Counting Crows/Goo Goo Dolls - 8/25 - Tweeter Center
7.The Taste Of Chicago Festival ...June 30 - July 9 @ Grant Park in Chicago...The food, my god the food! So much to eat and see, including live bands every night (Train and Macy Gray among others...eck.). Anyone wanna go with me?
8.Fireworks On The 4th Of July ...Hey its a night of free entertainment! Pack a picnic or a BBQ and hit up one of the 14 million places offering up the pretty lights that humans are so enamored by.
9.The Office Webisodes!!!!! ...Well I might have to wait 4 months to see what happens with Jim and Pam, but at least these mini episodes starring The Office's accounting department that will be offered up on the internet will hold me over somewhat. Oscar, Angela, and Kevin search for some mission funds through 10 eps...Stay tuned for more info on when and where.
10.The Weather ...Its hot. Girls wear less clothing. Everybody wins.

Add Comment PermalinkTHE OFFICE!!!! ....Only 4 more months until we're reunited.
Justin, 5/12/2006 01:31:49 AM
9 months ago I tuned into the the Steve Carrell starring, awkward silence laughter inducing comedy known as The Office, expecting to watch the 3-4 episodes that would air before we expected it to fade into the foggy sitcom purgatory with all the other shows I thought I could love (you know....Undeclared...That's My Bush...pretty much anything with Andy Richter.).
But then something magical happened. My Name Is Earl became the most popular new comedy in the country, and The Office rode the Earl wave all the way to a plum spot on the newly reborn NBC Comedy Thursdays.
Now last season The Office was funny. This season hilarious. Last season was vague undertones of a crush. This season was a maddening, make me want to pull my hair out and scream at the Television set hearbreaker. All the Yahoo TV Guide recaps may have started "Michael does blank, chaos ensues". But make no mistake this season was all about Jim and Pam. For 9 months we had to watch John Krasinski's lovelorn Jim pine for Jenna Fischer's already engaged to a jerk Pam, his best friend. Like a real crush, each week it got more and more intense and frustrating to watch Pam with Roy and watch Jim just look on. And in tonights Steve Carrell penned masterpiece it all boiled over. Watching in the last minute and a half as Jim finally professed his love for Pam and then to watch her tell him they could be nothing more than friends, and then as Jim came back to her and they finally...FINALLY KISSED! was to watch every relationship I've ever been in all rolled into one. It was 9 months of emo that exploded in one minute and made me JUMP out of my chair and scream "YES!" At my TV in an otherwise empty room. Watching that moment was watching TV at its best, to be hit on such a personal level that you become emotionally invested in fictional characters. So kudos to the whole cast. And thanks to Jim (John) and Pam (Jenna) for giving me a show to care that much about again. And thanks to Michael, Dwight, Intern Ryan, Toby, Kevin, Crede, Oscar, Meredith, Angela, Jan, Roy and all the other guys in the warehouse for coming along for the ride and making me crack up all season. Have a great summer.

What I Actually Ended Up Doing During April
Justin, 5/8/2006 11:08:33 AM
My 25 event celebration of the Quarter Century Of Excellence month saw me do the following to celebrate myself and the stuff I love:
Concerts
1.Straylight Run
2.Jack's Mannequin
3.Coldplay
4.Brand New
5.Taking Back Sunday
6.Matchbook Romance
7.Yellowcard
Baseball Games
8.Red Sox VS Blue Jays
9.Braves VS Padres
10.Phillies VS Nationals
Travel
11.New York City
12.Boston
13.Atlanta
14.Baltimore
15.Philadelphia
And Misc
16.Celebrated my heritage by attending a Passover Seder
17.Saw a Jerry Seinfeld comedy performance
18.Got back to nature when I went on a nature hike and saw some Civil War ruins
19.Meet Lita from the WWE at a Strip Club (long story)
20.Saw performance of Wicked at the Performing Arts Center
21.Then I saw a performance of the Wizard Of Oz actually...oddly enough I saw both in the same month.
22.Celebrating my love of Wrestling, me and Joe had a viewing of WrestleMania 22
23.Had time to hit 5 different malls (Neshaminy, Oxford Valley, Douglasville, King Of Prussia, and Baltimore Harbor)
24.and see 5 Movies (The Benchwarmers, Lucky Number Slevin, The Benchwarmers (again), When Do We Eat?, and Scary Movie 4)
25.Hell I got to hang out with just about all my friends old and new from Grade School through College buddies I haven't seen in like 2 years! Thanks to everyone who spent anytime with me in April doing things even I thought was ludicrous.
I mean in one month I was at the top of the Empire State Building, I macked on Cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery, I took in Ground Zero, Fenway Park, The Towson Spring Fair, I went to Love Park with my gf. I ate sushi with Ninjas at a place called Ninja, and other assorted fine foods (Best Burger I've possibly ever had at 5 Guys Burgers in Baltimore's Inner Harbor). And finally I spent a helluva lot of money. But I think it was worth it. I mean if I expired today what use would it be? And now I've accomplished all this stuff I wanted to do, so I think it was worth it. But I've also learned I probably should never do that much in one month again. At any rate that about covers the Quarter Century Of Excellence. Hopefully I'll see you back here for the Half Century Of Excellence in 24 years and 11 months!

Queen of Summer MMVI
Mike, 5/3/2006 11:29:25 PM
Hello reader(s)! As my colleague pointed out, it's that time of year again... SUMMER MOVIE SEASON. That, of course, heralds this website's one and only tradition:
Queen of Summer 2006 Poll
Vote for the hottest actress this summer and enjoy some juicy picks while picking your nose in front of the computer. What an age we live in!
*
Also, I'm kind of interested in hearing Steve's recap from Coachella. Can we get a post?
