I am come home
Mike, 5/28/2004 03:04:09 PM
First off, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who posted in my absence... it was a proud time for this humble webmaster.

Without further ado, the review of my second destination: Aurora, CO.

Destinations: Aurora, CO. Aurora is a crappy suburb outside Denver. It is comprised almost entirely of strip malls. Due to the unwillingness of my group and lack of any transportation, I never made it into downtown Denver. We passed briefly into Denver for dinner, but it was more of the same strip mall hell.

Food. With $40 a day from work, the food was ample. Since we were 1000s of miles from the ocean, I insisted on sampling the seafood and the restaurant we went to was really quite good. Of course, there was a steak place every 20 feet, so we had steak... which was excellent. I scarfed down two dinners at the hotel by myself and found them to be quite acceptable. For lunch, we dined at the lovely Raytheon cafeteria and a two other less notable restaurants. All in all, I found the food to be quite good. On our last night there, we ate at the Olive Garden and I started to wonder what kind of underwear the waitress was wearing.

Lodging. The Doubletree Hotel provided me with an enormous King Size bed and an ample room for my nightly solitary confinement. Numerous cable channels including Cartoon network kept me entertained on the elusive mountain time tv schedule.

Company. What to say about my coworkers...

Entertainment. A book borrowed from Brian, 9 PM Adult Swim on Cartoon network, my portable DVD player. It kept me busy enough while not at work but ... yikes.

Weather. Great weather, breezy and in the 70s... a little chilly in the morning but otherwise way better than balmy Baltimore.

Of all the trips I've taken, that was truly one of them.

Roller Coaster Reviews
Justin, 5/27/2004 04:14:08 PM
Since it is summer and one of peoples favorite things to do is to go to overpriced theme parks and wait in long lines for 2 minute rides, I thought I'd type up something on the subject. In 3 days this week I took on 2 of this areas top theme parks, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Hershey Park. So heres the reviews of the attractions I hit (I'll be reviewing on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best).

Six Flags Great Adventure - Jackson, NJ

Batman:The Ride - This suspended roller coaster with a Batman theme has always been a favorite of mine, with its fast twists and high altitude. Right when we got to the front of the line however, technical difficulties arose and we had to wait about 20 minutes for it to start back up. Always be aware of this potential problem when going theme parking. 4/5

Nitro - The East Coast's tallest and fastest steel mega roller coaster certainly didn't disappoint. Time seems to stand still as you wait to take the first drop, and then you plummet down with your stomach somewhere up around your head. 5/5

Skull Mountain - An indoor totally darkened coaster that makes up for its lack of loops and speed with the fact that you can't see one thing at all in front of you. 3/5

Superman:Ultimate Flight - In a new twist, you ride the coaster like your flying a la Superman. I can't describe the feeling you get when your flying straight down towards a loop like your about to fly directly into the ground. If you have bad knees this is not the ride for you. 4/5

Great American Scream Machine - They should rename this one the Great American Rust Machine if they aren't going to give this ancient coaster a paint job soon. The ride also slams you back and forth during its fast but uncomfortable ride. Instead of a picture booth they should have a chiropractor at the end of this ride. 2/5

Runaway Mine Train - This short non looping coaster is a good one for kids or first timers frightened of roller coasters. Not very exciting though compared to most of the new ones. 3/5

Medusa - This twisty, turny, loopy coaster was fast and fun all the way through with a good length of time to boot. Definitely worth the wait in line. 5/5

Coasters Closed - Batman:The Chiller, Viper
Coasters Missed - Rolling Thunder

Bonus Review:Spongebob Squarepants 3D Adventure - This 3D glasses movie/ride is one of the newest attractions at 6 Flags and I'm going to tell you that its just not that great. The seats are really bumpy with not enough padding during the "Seats get lifted and banged around like you are in the movie" portion of the show, and the 3D effects weren't too great (though that could be because we were sitting off to the far left, so try sitting in the center). Plus no real effects like wind, water, or heat like similar rides Muppet Show 3D at MGM Studios and Terminator 3D Battle Across Time at Universal Studios. Still it is freakin Spongebob Squarepants so.... 3/5

Hershey Park - Hershey, PA
I only had 2 hours here so this won't be as extensive a review.

Sidewinder - This innovative coaster rocks because it shoots you VERY fast down and around the two loops, and then you aren't done because once your done the second loop you go straight up to where you think your going to fly off the track only to be shot backwards back through. The feeling of going backwards through loops is a little disconcerting, but still cool. 4/5

SuperDooperLooper - One of the oldest coasters in the park again proves disappointing with a slower ride and only one loop. 2/5

The Great Bear - Another of those newfangled suspended coasters similar to Batman, takes you on a HIGH thrill ride on a surprisingly long track. Throw in some twists and the cool nature of Hershey Parks roller coaster snaking geograpy(your coasting right over and around 2 other coasters so it creates a cool labrynthine effect) make for one helluva fun ride. 5/5

Storm Runner - Herhsey Parks unbelievable new roller coaster this season is the world's first hydraulic launch coaster with inversions...Not totally sure what that means? Well how about this thing fires you from 0 to 72 MPH in 2 seconds flat and you take another long and MEGA FAST ride through the sweet set up of Hershey Park. If you only ride one coaster this year, make this one it. 5/5

Coasters closed/missed - Roller Soaker, Comet, Wildcat, Lightning Racer, Trailblazer

Now that you have read the reviews, get out there and ride these monstrosities for yourself! And coming soon...Dorney Park reviews!

    Layover
    Mike, 5/23/2004 12:27:12 PM
So I get a 26 hour stop off in Baltimore between my cruise vacation and my business trip to Denver... I think it would be remiss of me not to spend a fraction of that updating this beloved site.

For a side by side of my two trips I thought I'd break down the review.

    Carnival Glory

Destinations: Bahamas (Nassau), St. Thomas USVI, St. Martin. Each of these destinations was a little slice of paradise. St. Thomas was probably the nicest overall but seemed generally crippled by horrendous traffic. Nassau was a bit of a dive, but the Atlantis on Paradise Island was quite the resort. St. Martin looked like a developing St. Thomas and was all around less crowded but basically had the same stuff.

Food. The food on the Carnival Glory was top notch with no exceptions. The only exception was some funky cheesecake that was more of a warm, spongy affair than genuine cheesecake. The service was prompt and allowed for few pauses inbetween bouts of gorging. The (not quite) sushi bar was a hit with Irene and I found it to be quite acceptable. The buffet, pizza place, ice cream, and other stuff was also very good.

Lodging. Our room harkened back to my live-in closet in 3227, but was well enough designed to accomodate two people. The maids were thorough and neat. Towel animals were plentiful.

Company. Irene was excellent company, what more could I ask for? The other cruise patrons, on the other hand, were a bunch of inbred southern, nascar fan, rednecks. I felt like I was in the deep south. Lot of Bush votes in the house. We did meet some nice folks at our dining room table who were pretty cool, and also felt weirded out by the confederate dominancy of the boat.

Entertainment. Comedy shows, magic, casino... the boat was well equipped to keep us busy while at sea. Only a few times were we left wandering around bored. Boredom led us to buying a bunch of mini-liquors, but we were obviously pretty busy after that because we never drank them.

Weather. The sun was hot and scorching, however, the tropical breeze was constant and clouds floated past the sun every few minutes making the weather beautiful. Baltimore felt a lot worse upon return with its oppresive humidity.

    Overall, a pretty good vacation.

    Jennifer Garner, hot or not?
    Justin, 5/21/2004 12:17:28 AM
Mike says Jennifer Garner is too plain jane, while I say shes a gorgeous, sexified, full on babe. Then I've also heard someone (initials BMD), say she was cute, but has too much of a swimmers body. So what do you the people think? Post in with your opinion on this woman.

What I Say Goes This Week
    Justin, 5/21/2004 12:55:21 AM
Since I'm in charge this week, heres a list of TV shows I'm watching that you should too...trust me, its all good.

Late Night With Conan O' Brien - Where else can you see Tom Selleck shave off half his moustache? And the shows only gotten better since Conan added his "Walker:Texas Ranger Lever", with which one pull can instantaneously call forth a scene from Walker:Texas Ranger.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force - I'm totally hooked on this uproarious toon that features 3 human sized fast food items living in New Jersey. Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad rule.

Forty Dollars A Day - This fun show on the food network features hotty host Rachel Ray going from city to city trying to eat three meals at cool local eateries on just 40 bucks a day...My kinda chick, hot, cheap, and everytime she eats something she orgasmically mmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm's over and over again and describes the taste.

Celebrity Poker Showdown - B level celebrities battle it out for their chosen charities in high stakes games of No Limit Texas Hold Em...The new batch of episodes start soon with new host, Dave Foley of Kids In The Hall and NewsRadio.

Arrested Development - I still won't give up on the absolute undisputed best comedy of the year and I'll keep mentioning it on this site and telling everyone I know to watch it until I KNOW its coming back for another 5 seasons. Look for the season finale to finally air on June 6 at 8:30.

    On malls--
    RJ, 5/20/2004 11:50:11 PM
I don't really understand why we have malls anymore. I mean, everything costs more, we usually have to drive several hundred feet (if not a few miles) to get there, they are filled with children, and they don't have Golden Corral restaurants in the food courts.

Now, if you have ever eaten at a Golden Corral (GC), then you know just how glorious a buffet can be. Sure, it costs upwards of 10 bucks for the buffet and a drink, but have you ever been to a buffet with FUDGE?!?!?!? That's right, fudge served to you, unlimited fudge. How much fudge do you think you could get at GODIVA for 10 bucks? NOT VERY GODDAMNED MUCH! You get UNLIMITED fudge at GC.

And steak!!! They sure as shit don't sell steak at Finish Line, but at GC, you get unlimted sirloin cooked to order, which goes down really well after their buttered biscuits.

Chicken? Pork Ribs? Corn? Try finding those things at Baskin Robbins. Or if you're big on anorexia, the salad bar will give you a few types of letuce and calorie free vegetables. I like to get a bowl of dressing and one piece of romaine lettuce, dip the lettuce in the bowl, eat it, and then throw out the bowl and do it again. Just because I can. Do you think that the Bombay Company would let me throw a $600 chair off the second floor of King of Prussia and then just walk out with another one? NO WAY!

And let's not get started on the creamed spinach.

For the reasons above, I would feel better about malls if they existed as one wing of a giant Golden Corral complex.

How dare you insult the sanctity of the food court! Where else can you find foods and peoples from all different nations and cultures living together in harmony!?!? The prices are good, the portions are good, and the comaraderie can't be matched! Why one time Mike and I were at the mall food court when a guy we didn't know just sat down with us and started eating...I mean we did just get up and walk away wordlessly, but the story itself is priceless. And where else but a mall food court can you spot such hotties walking, talking, and shopping!??!? It's probably one of the most perfect places in the world...a modern day garden of eden. Meanwhile, you insult this holy place in favor of an ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET??? All you can eat buffets are whats wrong with America! It's why we are one of the most obese overweight and disgusting countries in the world. Setting loose all those rubes on a buffet to go up for sevenths and eighths on mac and cheese, soft serve ice cream, and low grade roast beef aren't good for anyone. And its so great battling your way up to the front of the line to witness a woman in a motorized chair taking the entire tray of crab legs back to her table to gorge on. Plus, buffets are disgusting, what with the 4800 kids running around, putting their hands on every roll, sneezing on things, and generally spreading germs and disease to everyone else in the restaurant. I'd rather eat in a supermarket parking lot.

The pain of Reel big fish
    RJ, 5/20/2004 11:33:33 PM
As some of you know, I am slowly being overwhelmed with crappy whiney emo pop punk crap. You know, stuff like "your hair is everywhere" lah lah lah...

For years I've felt that this mind numbing drivel is fit only for the melodramatic musical interludes during chick flicks. But then I received the gift of music from Mike.

Not that I am really qualified to create music, but I do like to fiddle with the bass, creating a sound that is akin to beating a kitten with a tuning fork.

And in my fiddling, I've noticed something about this crappy sound known as emo-- it's easier to play than funky jam bands and other such stuff that I would rather listen to. And it's catchy. And...god forbid, some of it rocks.

But herein lies the problem. I have found that the more a song rocks, the better the band, but the better the band, the harder the bass tabs, and the more my sound resembles the musical equivalent of the drunken crazy man outide of CVS rambling about a banana peel.

So the moral of the story? I must endure this transitional phase of crappiness, in the hope of reaching the nirvana of music.

Hearts and thoughts they fade away.

And on a side note, reel big fish just might rock harder than I thought they did. Tickets will likely be purchased this weekend during mike's 14 minute layover in baltimore.
  • From Justin on 5/21/2004:
By the nirvana of music, do you mean you will be able to play Nirvana's music? You did mention lyrics from a Pearl Jam song, so maybe you are ready to take on the world of grunge.

    RRRRRRRRRRRRR Matey
    Justin, 5/19/2004 11:01:27 PM
Heres a new Top 5 List for WWSG...Top 5 Pirates!

5.Captain Hook - The basis for every cartoon pirate that followed...This guy had a hook for a hand, and a deep seeded phobia of Crocodiles...but he does lose points for getting his ass kicked by a bunch of kids that talked to a magical fairy.

4.Blackbeard The Pirate - This bad ass pirate of the 1700's terrorized people bad enough that he earned a big price on his head from the Governor of Virginia. So two buccaneer hunters, Captain's Hyde and Maynard set out after him in the Jane and the Ranger. During the battle, Blackbeard's ship the Adventure, disable the Jane and killed Captain Hyde with its cannons, then boarded the Jane. During the fierce battle Blackbeard fought Maynard personally, injuring him with his sword, so Maynard shot Blackbeard point blank...and ol' Blackbeard kept right on fighting. Then a crewmember joined the fray, cutting Blackbeard in the neck with his sword, to which Blackbeard screamed "Well done lad!" The second swipe of the blade beheaded Blackbeard. Then, legend has it, that the headless body ran amok, jumped overboard, then swam around the ship.

3.The Pittsburgh Pirates - Though dead last in their division right now, don't count out these baseballers. Terrorizing the National League since 1889, they appeared in the first World Series in 1903 (losing the series to the Boston Americans, or future perennial losers Boston Red Sox). Though they did go on to win five World Championships over the next couple decades. Among the more esteemed crew members of this scurvy crew have been Honus Wagner, Roberto Clemente, and Barry Bonds

2.Long John Silver - This fast food chain opened up in 1969, and went on to pillage and plunder the seafood end of the fast food industry. Serving almost 4 million guests weekly, LJS became even more powerful when it merged with A&W in 1999 and then became a part of the Yum! Brands Inc. in 2002 making it the largest Restaurant System in the world (it also includs KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut).

1.Cap'n Jack Sparrow - Johnny Depp's Oscar nominated turn in one of the top grossing and subsequently best movies of 2003 was masterful, hilarious, and reeked of fun. They say that Captain Sparrow was once marooned on an island by himself in the Caribbean and escaped by making a boat out of Turtles, tying them together with back hair (Though it was later found out that "the secret, grand adventure of the infamous Jack Sparrow. You spent three days lying on a beach drinking rum?!?" To which he replied "Welcome to the Caribbean luv.")
In all seriousness though, Depp based his performance on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, and Hunter Thompson, the drugged out reporter from Depp's Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. Now bring me that horizon....

Something Corporate Live At Recher Theater Review
    Justin, 5/11/2004 01:20:38 PM
Last night me and Miguel went over to the charming Recher Theater in Towson, Maryland to check out SOCO on their solo tour. The venue was interesting in that it featured a haggardley middle aged women working the merch table with no discernible job telling her friend on the phone about all the "teenyboppers here tonight". She sent us next door to the bar (because there was no ticket window in the venue itself) to buy Reel Big Fish tickets assuring us it would sell out.
Woodbelly opened up the show with their Sublime like sounding jam music. The lead singer broke a guitar string halfway through the set, necessitating some impromptu jamming from the bassist and drummer. After the set a Woodbelly worker(?) offered to sell us there cd for ten dollars. Five was offered. A deal could not be reached.
Next up was The Rocket Summer. The lead singer was like Kenny from The Starting Line JR. except he played every instrument on stage at some point including drums, keyboard, and guitar, which in and of itself was pretty cool. However, the break between every song saw the singer blessing us and thanking jesus, so we couldn't tell if they were a christian punk band or not. Given some time this band could be pretty good though.
Something Corporate took the stage after a lengthy break and broke it out immediately with Hurricane, 21 and Invincible and I Woke Up In A Car. That crowd was totally apeshit and all over the place making it easy to maneuver up to the front. SoCo played a pretty long set that drew from both their albums and didn't slow down until near the end when they pulled out 9 minute long fan favorite ballad Konstantine. But unlike their last show they didn't play an entire slow set, electing to eliminate Globes And Maps and instead going into a fast paced fun rendition of Drunk Girl then in a shocker playing directly into a rousing version of Outkast's Hey Ya! In its entirety. Then they finished off the fun filled night with Me And The Moon and finally the awesome rocker Punk Rock Princess. Great great show. And I can't leave without mentioning SoCo guitarist Josh's kick ass Rolling Rock beer logo painted guitar.

    Upcoming CD
    Justin, 5/6/2004 12:23:22 AM
This summer is going to rock...not just live with all the great summer tours, but with some brand new shit to pop into your car's CD player while you cruise along.
Vicious rumors of how me and a certain other WWSG webmaster took a vow to never purchase a CD again are unfortunately true I'm sad to report...but heres the top 4 reasons to break that vow.

4.Midtown - Forget What You Know (6/29) - After finally liberating itself from Drive Thru Records, Midtown is back on the scene with a renewed vigor they recently showcased at the Skate And Surf...Hopefully after this effort hits the streets they won't be relegated to venues like the North Star Bar (which they will be playing on 6/3) anymore.

3.Newfound Glory - Catalyst (5/18) - On the other side of the coin the band that flourished on DTR and became the cash cow/flagship of the company, NFG is about to release their 4th album. Outlook is pretty good on this one with a catchy first single in the form of "All Downhill From Here". Look for them headlining Warped Tour along with...

2.Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want To Be (7/27) - TBS with its revamped lineup brings us perhaps the most anticapated punk/scr/emo rock album of the summer. Will it live up to the already legendary status of their debut "Tell All Your Friends"? Will the songs sound as good on the album, as they did live on TBS's last couple tours? And most importantly what could be a more interesting album to win out on this prestigious list?

1.Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - Live From Johnny's Bar Mitzvah (7/27) - Yes you read that right...last year a music publishing honcho named Randall Wixen hired punk's cover all-stars to play his son Johnny's ascent into manhood. This live album recorded at the blessed event, will feature covers of hits from The Beatles, Billy Joel, and Led Zeppelin among others...and also a rocking rendition of "Hava Nagila". Shalom hunger, shalom free food!
  • From Joe on 5/6/2004:
If you're into music with a more of an edge to it, I advise you to not miss these upcoming releases:

Bad Religion-The Empire Strikes First(6/8)-If this album is only half as good as their 2002 release The Process Of Belief, then this should be one of the best albums this year.

My Chemical Romance-Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge(6/8)-MCR's second album and major label debut is sure to rock your socks off. I highly recommend picking up their first CD I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love to see what they're all about.
