So Mike and I had the distinct pleasure of catching the lounge/comedy/rock band fusion juggernaut of The Dan Band at the TLA on Saturday night. You might remember them as the wedding band singing a profanity laced version of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" in Old School, or the Bar Mitzvah band in Starsky And Hutch. A popular act with celebs in LA, Dan and his motley crew of a glorified cover band have taken their act on the road.
Definitely worth the price of admission, as Dan and co. hit the stage following a faux music video set to Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On", amidst the Wonder Woman theme song. The twist to The Dan Band is that they only cover music by woman's artists from a womans point of view. Dan and his band blew through a hilarious hour and ten minute set that included songs such as "I Am Woman", "Gloria", "Ring My Bell" (complete with a bell ringing segueway), and crowd favorite "Lady". Of course the major laughs and absurdity came from Dan and his two backup singers performing their choreographed over-the-top dance routines, and peppering the word Fuck in almost every song pretty liberally. Definite highlights were the two Pop music medleys of Salt N' Pepa's "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" along with En Vogues "Never Gonna Get It", and the "Don'tcha"/"My Humps"/"Milkshake" medley. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention Dan Finnerty's constant banter with members of the audience. Of course the main highlights for us was the actual rocking performance of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", and the face melting encore of Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know".
Truly Dan's act is a funny if unoriginal one, that I could see fitting right in at a Las Vegas casino with 2 shows nightly, but it was nice to have it in Philadelphia for a couple (half)hours this weekend. If you get a chance, check it out for something different....Pictures forthcoming!

I just noticed that we've gone far too long without a patented wwsg Top Ten List. So I thought short and softly about a list I could provide, you our cherished readers. And I remembered that I was recently stuck on the side of I-95 for 50 minutes a few days back waiting for help on a flattened tire. So I present to you:
Top Ten Things To Do When Your Stuck On The Side Of I-95
1.Read A CD Lyric Book
2.Throw Things At Traffic
3.Set Up An Omelette Bar For Hungry Penn-Dot Workers
4.Knit A Baby Blanket With Clown Faces On It
5.Talk To Yourself...Then Ask Yourself Out Loud Why You Are Talking To Yourself
6.Pray For Death
7.Catch Some Zzzzz's
8.Order A Pizza
9.Suntan On Your Cars Roof
10.Practice For Your Air Band

Olympics Suck
Mike, 2/21/2006 08:47:14 PM
Seriously, is anyone watching these things? If I were in charge, here are some sports I would add:
1) Figure Skating Freeshoot - This event takes place at the same time as figure skating. While the figure skaters do their routines, snipers in the stands attempt to pick off the skaters with elephant tranquilizers. Points are awarded for clean shots and creative timing.
2) Unextreme Skiing - Taking a page from real life, skiers must complete a downhill course while a volley of snowboarders surf around them and do tricks.
3) Snow Shoveling - The Olympian who posts the fastest time clearing 3 feet of snow from a 2 car garage driveway takes home the gold.
4) Ice Fishing - The first athlete to drill a hole through the ice and catch a fish wins this one. What? It's still more exciting than ice dancing.
5) Arena Football - Those XFL players must be in desperate need of work by now.
6) Full Contact Curling

SOOOOOOOOO its spring time almost, and that means theres going to be some good tours coming around these parts again.
Here are the ones I will probably be checking out at some point.
Fallout Boy/All-American Rejects - 3/18 - Tweeter Center
Saves The Day - 3/30 - Trocadero
Coheed And Cambria/Avenged Sevenfold - 4/9 - Asbury Park Convention Hall
Matchbook Romance/The Early November - 4/21 - Electric Factory
Taking Back Sunday - 4/23 - Trocadero
and Jack's Mannequin has also started announcing tour dates finally! Hopefully one will be around here.
Also, I've been working diligently at updating the setlist archive, and it now has 50 setlists from various shows. So if you've ever seen a show with me check it out, I might have mentioned you in the notes!

Fantasy Baseball Island
Justin, 2/12/2006 07:09:14 PM
Its cold out, theres snow on the ground, but today my heart was warmed with an email today simply titled "Fantasy Baseball!" Yes thats right, who wants to come play Fantasy Baseball with me, Mike, and some other people? You know you do. I mean none of you stand any chance of taking me in a Fantasy World Series, as my Awesome Blossoms (hopefully) led by Manny Ramirez destroy any and all that attempt to go for second base with us. Ah if only Pete Rose were draftable. It might be 20 degrees outside, but in my basement its 85 and balmy with a chance of Hot Dogs and Balks.

So I was at Best Buy yesterday to buy the Drive Thru Records Greatest Hits CD, but it was like 13.99 and I was like I already have all these songs, thats too much to pay for that. But I had made a specific trip to Best Buy to get some new music in my life, so I decided to pick up Fenix TX's "Purple Reign In Blood:Live". The Live retrospecticus which will most likely be the last Fenix TX release ever that was recorded during last years reunion shows in Arizona (and was a precursor to the short lived reunion tour this year, during which they broke up several times apparently). The CD does a body good though, if that body is hurting for some catchy pop-punk and sophmoric stage banter (which I was).
The whole point of this is theres not many CD's officially coming out right now that I'm interested in. Actually theres just 2:
Matchbook Romance - Voices - 2/14
Saves The Day - Sound The Alarm - 4/4
That is all. Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and Brand New are all in the studio though....Maybe Brand News new CD will be ready to hit shelves by 2025 and beat "Chinese Democracy" by a week or two if Jesse Lacey ever finds his sanity. Anyways it looks like I'll have to seek out some new bands or older releases to listen too...Mike mentioned the new Franz Ferdinand as being a good disc. Anyone else out there have anything good?

But what are your feelings on teh muhammad cartoons?
Uhhhh....I don't really care about them in any way. Now drawings of Psylocke on the other hand, that I could get into.

Remember that scene in Fight Club where Ed Norton has to go into the cave to find his power animal? And it was a Penguin and it told him to "slide...slide."?
Well we realized last weekend that that scene had had a delayed profound impact on our lives, and that we too in fact had to find our power animals. The trigger to this discovery was that I realized that my power animal was also the Penguin, or maybe the Puffin.
Mike has tapped into the power of the Mongoose.
Very soon we will be posting a tangible way for you to discover what your Power Animal is here at wwsg. In the meantime, if you already know your Power Animal feel free to share it with us.

Denigration of Muhammad
RJ, 2/2/2006 08:15:44 PM
Whether or not these pictures are deserving of such condemnation, the reaction of many European leaders is. By refusing to defend this cornerstone of pluralistic liberal society—the freedom to express one’s views without threat of violence or incarceration—these “leaders” forsake those ideals that have made us (the West) nations of laws, not men.
Certainly, it is reasonable to be sensitive-- to avoid subjects that needlessly insult one billion people. Yet by apologizing, the message is that violence is justified for insult; that preserving honor—rather than universal human rights—should be the world’s highest ideal.
Have we become such apologists that we cannot muster the courage to deny the existence of a magical category of expression so insulting as to justify the stoning of he who utters it? Shall we denigrate the memory of Van Goh by intimating the artist’s death was deserved?
It took the West thousands of years to codify free expression. These recent events reflect just how far the Muslim world has to go. Though I hate the thought, perhaps Samuel Huntington was right...
