Here it is ladies...the grand-daddy of them all.
We will start with the real junk this year.
Worst Ten Movies Of The Year
10.The Golden Compass
9.Resident Evil:Extinction
8.Black Snake Moan
7.Georgia Rule
6.The Comebacks
5.Beowulf
4.Factory Girl
3.Delta Farce
2.Epic Movie
1.Southland Tales
Man Southland Tales was an unintelligible abomination of film making. With that cast? C'mon.
And without any further ado....
Top Ten Movies Of The Year
10.Darjeeling Limited
9.Juno
8.Walk Hard
7.The Hot Fuzz
6.Live Free Or Die Hard
5.The 300
4.Transformers
3.sUPerbad
2.Knocked Up
1.Shoot Em Up
Honorable Mentions:
Blades Of Glory
Ratatouille
Spider-Man 3
Pirates Of The Caribbean:At Worlds End
The Simpsons Movie
I dunno man this list was freakin hard to compile. The order after number 4 gets a bit iffy as I enjoyed them all so much. And in the end I just couldn't decide what really deserved to be left off, so I just took Blades Of Glory off. I dunno. It would have been wrong to have a tie in there I guess. The honorable mentions were all on my list at what time or another. I loved them all. Spider-Man was the other hard one to actually take off, but I did have a couple problems with it like the Sandman storyline ret-con. Pirates I felt was really the second half of a mega long movie and it kind of suffers from not being taken as a whole with Dead Mans Chest, plus the overly confusing betrayals and the really important story explaining deleted scene also hurt it. Ratatouille was an absolute pleasure, and Simpsons overachieved after an almost 20 year wait for the movie.
As for the top 4, they were all really awesome...But for me the over-the-top balls out fun of Shoot Em Up trumped Superbad and Knocked Up because they kind of cancelled each other out for me. Superbad might have been funnier, but Knocked Up was a better movie.
And that ladies and gentleman, concludes a fantastic year at the movies!
Join me next year, won't you, at a theatre near you.
Top Movies 2007
Justin, 12/31/2007 03:48:01 PM
Charlie Wilson's War? Seriously?
Once again we have 7 matches. Mind boggling. Or not.
Once again we have 7 matches. Mind boggling. Or not.
Well, I'm a big fan of political snark, Tom Hanks, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Also, "Charlie's Angels" were pretty entertaining.
Also, Epic Movie was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I wouldn't even call it a movie. It felt like a really long Mad TV sketch. To call it a movie might be an insult to Battlefield Earth and Batman and Robin, my previous all time worst movies.

My Top 7 Albums of the Year:
7. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
6. Ted Leo - Living with the Living
5. Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
4. Straylight Run - The Needles The Space
3. Ozma - Pasadena
2. William Tell - You Can Hold Me Down
1. Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light
JEW's latest offering dominates my list with a handful of other albums that together could barely add up to one Chase This Light. Ozma and William Tell provide the best start to finish efforts while Straylight Run, Smashing Pumpkins, Ted Leo, and Arcade Fire put together a nice majority of rock but with a few dud tracks on each CD. I could probably think of about 5 more CDs this year that I spent enough time listening to to consider adding to this list but they just weren't good enough to make the cut (Foo Fighters, I'm looking at you).
Top 5 Concerts
5. Straylight Run @ Trocadero, Philadelphia, PA (12/13)
4. Smashing Pumpkins @ Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA (10/21)
3. Ozma/William Tell @ Slims, San Francisco, CA (5/18)
2. My Chemical Romance/Muse @ William and Mary College, Williamsburg, VA (4/28)
1. Jimmy Eat World @ State Theater, New Brunswick, NJ (11/6)
Alright, first things first, I also saw Jimmy a few days later at the Factory and that show rocked as well but I didn't want to include a band twice on my short list. From what I hear, MCR played an incredible set at the Tweeter on 8/25 but I missed it, so the William and Mary show will have to do. It did benefit from a start to finish set of The Black Parade and the inclusion of Muse, a band which truly knows the meaning of rock. The show at Slims was a blast, I enjoyed every set that night... cobbling a bunch of B-List bands into a worthy night. Finally, Smashing Pumpkins and Straylight Run both outplayed their respective new CDs and get bonus points for the unorthodox appearance of their frontmen (zombie paleness, amish beard, respectively).

My Top 10 Albums Of The Year:
(I listened to more CD's than Mike)
10.Newfound Glory - From The Screen To Your Stereo II
9.Kelly Clarkson - My December
8.Reel Big Fish - Monkeys For Nothing And The Chimps For Free
7.The Starting Line - Direction
6.The Academy Is... - Santi
5.William Tell - You Can Hold Me Down
4.Saves The Day - Under The Boards
3.Straylight Run - The Needles, The Space
2.Say Anything - In Defense Of The Genre
1.Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light
Nobody does it better than Jimmy Adkins and his world eaters, its just that simple. No other album even touched the new JEW. Say Anything's Genre defending, genre bending, 2 disc magnum opus was a thing to behold though. Max Bemis is a brilliant musician, and this was truly an accomplishment. SLR's cd was leaps better than its last release, as was the newly refreshed STD and RBF. TSL and TAI continued maturing and these discs both provided some great pop tunes. William Tell, formerly of Something Corporate blew me away with his solo debut, and hopefully there will be more touring from him to come. I love Kelly Clarkson, and her new CD (still like the last one better though. And finally the new NFG cover CD is the very definition of guilty pleasure. It took songs I actually hated and made me enjoy them. And I even recognized all of them! Total fun, which is more than I can say for the new Me First And The Gimme Gimme's CD from earlier this year.
Finally I liked Ted Leo's new CD, but I got into all his stuff this year and it all kind of blended together for me, so I didn't feel right ranking it.
Top 5 Concerts
5.Incubus @ Electric Factory - Philadelphia, PA (1/29)
4.Projekt Revolution (Linkin Park/MCR/TBS) @ Tweeter Center - Camden, NJ (8/25)
3.Brand New @ Electric Factory - Philadelphia, PA (4/25)
2.Jimmy Eat World @ Electric Factory - Philadelphia, PA (11/10)
1.Allister @ The Metro - Chicago, IL (7/20)
Incubus brought the rock during their Winter club tour with a friggin blow away show. They were firing on all cylinders, and the rabid crowd even drew them back out for unexpected closer "Calgone". Seeing them live is an exeperience every music lover should give themselves.
The Projekt Revolution package pretty much sold itself, but then after TBS put on a pretty good set, MCR just destroyed the place. Watching a drained Gerard Way chug pedialyte on stage remains a highlight of my year. Linkin Park also just completely went above and beyond all expectations I had of them by playing a fucking awesome show. I guess theres a reason they still sell records while Fred Durst is probably on welfare now.
Brand New has become one of my top three favorite live bands. The show ending, 3 drum set featuring, stage destroying "Welcome To Bangkok" ended what had already been an awesome and emotional performance.
Jimmy was a pleasure both nights, but I found the crowd energy and the set slightly more pleasing during the Philly show as opposed to the seated New Brunswick show.
Finally without a doubt my favorite concert all year was Allister's final show. I've written all I can write about it already in the set list archive, but again, watching the show ending performance of one of my favorite songs ever "Somewhere On Fullerton" with every member of all the incarnations of the band was just one of those goose bump moments. Totally worth the flight to Chicago.
Honorable mentions to the Ted Leo 12/6 show for the "Dayman" performance, The Starting Line 12/29 show for the "Best Of Me" crowd sing along, the Straylight Run 12/13 show for honoring my encore request for "Dignity And Money" (Love the Beard John!), Live Earth on 7/7 for seeing Zach Braff in person, Dashboard Confessional on 11/12 for a hilarious overall show and the wonderful "El Scorcho" cover, and the last Early November show from 4/15. Seriously of the 30 shows I went to all year, I didn't not enjoy any of them.
Of course my honorable mentions wouldn't be complete without the show that never was, the Brand New Triple Crown Records Tenth Anniversary show where they performed Your Favorite Weapon in its entirety. I'll go to my grave regretting I missed it.

2007's Top Ten TV Shows
Justin, 12/27/2007 11:21:02 AM
We start the year end lists with the greatest TV shows of the year...according to me.
So without further ado...
Top Ten TV Shows 2007
1.L 0 S T
2.It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
3.The Office
4.Peep Show
5.30 Rock
6.House
7.Family Guy
8.Burn Notice
9.South Park
10.Scrubs/Entourage (A Tie!!!!!! I just couldn't decide between the two, so live with it.)
Honorable Mention - In Case Of Emergency
No show has given me such a fevered obsession and excitement as LOST has this year. The season finale "Through The Looking Glass" was the best 2 hours of TV all year anywhere, and is in at least the top 3 cliffhangers ever. For me, there was LOST and there was everything else.
As for everything else, IASIP was hilarious before, but now that its really caught fire with the masses and found its groove nothing is funnier or more fucked up. Charlie Pace has nothing on Charlie Day. I think I'd have to choose Nightman/Dayman over You All Everybody.
The Office continued its overall excellence with the Jim/Pam union finally FINALLY happening!
Peep Show was fucking excellent, though I'm pretty sure pretty much everyone in the US is unaware the show even exists. 30 Rock is always a great hilarious pleasure, and Alec Baldwin is brilliant.
Just as brilliant as the smarmy Greg House portrayed by the always awesome Hugh Laurie. Plus I loved all the shakeups of the cast and fun of picking new team members (including Kal Penn!).
Family Guy had two ball bustingly funny episodes in the Back To The Future lampooning, Rick Astley rocking finale "Meet The Quagmires" from last season and the fucking spectacular season premiere Star Wars remake of "Blue Harvest". I'm taking this couch.
The new USA spy action-comedy Burn Notice was a fun breath of fresh air with the always welcome Bruce Campbell bringing the funny.
South Park was a resurgent pleasure, with the "Guitar Queero" ep a definite high point.
Finally Scrubs and Entourage were both enjoyable, but both in a decline from past seasons quality I thought, so they are tied.
And finally In Case Of Emergency, it fought the good fight for about 11 episodes, and it was hilarious and imaginative, and it had a great ensemble cast (Jonothon Silverman! David Arquette! Kelly Hu!!!!!! Lori Loughlin!), but alas it just couldn't survive the harsh minefield of network television. I will miss it for what it could have been.
That pretty much wraps it up...it was truly a GREAT year for TV. Hopefully the writers strike won't rape me out of a great TV year in 2008.
So without further ado...

5. Battlestar Galactica (2)

Dropoffs: ATHF, My Boys, Scrubs, 24
You might be thinking 1-3 look all too similar to Justin's list, but I wrote this list before I ever saw his-- the fact of the matter is, it's just the correct viewing regiment. There was so much good tv this year it was tough to order the rest. I must give credit to Family Guy for realing bouncing back this season. For a show that is essentially plotless and formulaic all at once, it still had me laughing out loud this year. I almost put South Park on this list, but I decided one great episode (Guitar Queer-o) does not a top 10 tv show make.
If you want to live, you need to come with me!

Visions Of Cancelled Television Shows Dancing In My Head
Justin, 12/19/2007 10:08:06 PM
Sometimes I'll be sitting here at my desk staring off into the void, and I will get a flash of a cancelled TV show that I used to watch that people only vaguely remember.
So in the vain of that late night sketch comedy The EDGE that starred Wayne Knight and Jennifer Aniston, and that presidential puppet sitcom Joe and I obsessed about a few years ago, I bring you:
HARDBALL.
In the midst of the 1994 Baseball strike, FOX presented a sitcom about a wacky and subpar Baseball team with a crazy mascot named Hardball. The show may or may not have been a spin-off from Major League. And also Joe Rogan was in it. Heres a link to Hardball's TV.com page....does anyone else remember this? I wish I could get it on DVD.

In Case You Didn't Notice
Justin, 12/10/2007 02:56:26 PM
Hello my faithful readers! Here is some helpful information for you all in case you didn't notice!
1.Black Friday 2007's log is now up in the Black Friday section. Just scroll down and look right, then click on Black Friday.
2.The scant few pictures we took on BF are also up in the pictures section, including shots from the Bruno Family Reunion Touch Football Game.
3.There was no other place to properly discuss this, but at the Ted Leo show last week, Ted mentioned someone doing Charliework (if you don't know what that means please run out and buy It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD). Then I yelled PLAY DAYMAN! And Ted FUCKING Leo and the FUCKING Pharmacists to play Dayman, with full crowd sing along on the "Ohhhhhh Ohhhhhh" part. IT WAS EPIC.
4.If you did not know, then you should know right now: If you are a girl/woman/lady/tranny...DO NOT WEAR FUZZY UGG BOOTS. They are the worst piece of fashion shit in the galaxy. Do not wear them with a skirt. Do not wear them with a t-shirt. Do not wear them in the house. Do not wear them with a blouse. Do not wear them out to play. Do not wear them while getting laid. Do not wear Ugg boots no more. If you wear them, you are a whore.
5.The Back To The Future spoof episode of Family Guy was on again last week...that episode is the fucking jet. Also if you did not know, the Back To The Future:The Ride has closed at Universal Studios Orlando, and Universal Studios Hollywood. It remains open in Universal Studios Japan if you still wish to ride it. However, it has been replaced with a brand spankin' new Simpsons Simulator Ride....which I look forward to getting on sometime next year. Uber pwnage.

Movie Retrospecticus
Mike, 12/6/2007 04:58:45 PM
I'm coming up on the end of year four of reviewing movies on this site and although I think my ratings are usually on the money, sometimes, in retrospect, opinions change. So I went through my list and choose 10 ratings I would change. Here they come, from most recent to oldest:
Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift 7/29/06
Then: 1
Now: 2
I can't identify one thing about this movie that I like or that I think is any good. However, whenever I see it on HBO or Encore I feel compelled to watch this strange love letter to underground Tokyo street racing.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest 7/10/06
Then: 3
Now: 1
This is probably one of the worst summer blockbusters I ever saw and I guess I gave it 3 stars just to not seem like a snob. Well, this injustice ends now. This movie was terrible. It tried to become an arching second movie like Empire Strikes Back but by the end it left me with absolutely no enthusiasm to see POTC3. At least The Matrix waited to the third movie to kill the series.
X-Men: The Last Stand 5/30/06
Then: 4
Now: 3
I think I was a little over exuberant with my rating here. "I'm the Juggernaut, Bitch." What the hell was that, anyway? I'm still cool with them killing off Cyclops in the beginning though. True to X-Men comics, a bunch of people get killed off, but you know they'll get ret-conned back to life someday.
Just Friends 11/25/05
Then: 4
Now: 2
I will not say that I didn't enjoy this movie when I watched it, but after watching it a couple more times I am shocked with how unfunny it has become. I think I was swayed too much by the hilarious diva performance of Anna Farris. Why doesn't she act more?
The 40 Year Old Virgin 8/21/05
Then: 4
Now: 5
This was a hilarious movie that started the Apatowevolution. It only seems fair that I rate it 5 like its brethren Knocked Up and Superbad.
Mr. 3000 9/18/04
Then: 2
Now: 4
This movie aged like a fine wine. It had a surprising number of memorable moments and quotes for a silly little sports comedy. It's the Field of Dreams for our generation.
Spiderman 2 6/30/04
Then: 2
Now: 0
This will conclude the negative portion of my retrospecticus. This movie just sucked on all levels, true believer!
Man On Fire 5/6/04
Then: 3
Now: 4
Man On Fire was one crazy movie. Denzel's performance was so over the top it almost looped around to believable. Tony Scott's insane crosscut directing reached its pinnacle. Christopher Walken... well, he played Christopher Walken.
Broken Lizard's Club Dread 2/29/04
Then: 1
Now: 3
Alright, still not a great movie, but it did introduce the world to the musical stylings of Cocunut Pete. It wasn't what I was expecting to see back then, but it certainly occupies a portion of my movie psyche now.
Eurotrip 2/22/04

Sometimes it's hard to tell if a comedy was any good or if you were just in the mood to laugh. Eurotrip has held up well. While it doesn't seem to have ignited the careers of any of its young protagonists, it did have a lot of a hilarious moments, a nice DVD transition, and, of course, a great theme song.
Well that's it for now. I promise more compotent reviewing in the future!

I can't identify one thing about this movie that I like or that I think is any good. However, whenever I see it on HBO or Encore I feel compelled to watch this strange love letter to underground Tokyo street racing.

I will not say that I didn't enjoy this movie when I watched it, but after watching it a couple more times I am shocked with how unfunny it has become. I think I was swayed too much by the hilarious diva performance of Anna Farris. Why doesn't she act more?

This was a hilarious movie that started the Apatowevolution. It only seems fair that I rate it 5 like its brethren Knocked Up and Superbad.

This movie aged like a fine wine. It had a surprising number of memorable moments and quotes for a silly little sports comedy. It's the Field of Dreams for our generation.

This will conclude the negative portion of my retrospecticus. This movie just sucked on all levels, true believer!

Alright, still not a great movie, but it did introduce the world to the musical stylings of Cocunut Pete. It wasn't what I was expecting to see back then, but it certainly occupies a portion of my movie psyche now.

Justin, 12/2/2007 06:14:42 PM
For those old school readers out there you may remember the WWSG Movie Blender...where I take some movies and mix the plots together in the patented WWSG Blendomatic 4000.

5. Children of Men
4. Knocked Up

2. Superbad
1. The Hot Fuzz
Like Justin said, there were a lot of really good movies this year so it was tough to get this in order. There were also a lot of really bad movies. In some ways, I felt like there weren't a lot of mediocre movies in between. Hot Fuzz and Superbad both excelled with memorable portrayals of the classical buddy team, albeit in very different contexts. Shoot 'Em Up was something to be seen to be believed. In terms of straight up drama, Children of Men was the best of the year, but if that movie gets you feeling too depressed there's the uplifting Darjeeling Limited, which should have got more attention than it did. Probably the biggest surprise of this year was Live Free or Die Hard. Never bet against John McClane!
Honorable mention: Transformers. You had the courage to show Bumblebee peeing and I respect that.
