Shoe Envy
Justin, 1/28/2008 02:42:32 PM
Why do women take so long getting ready? Because they are trying to find just the right shoes. I didn't understand this until the other night.
Girls will try on pair after pair trying to get just the right blend of fashion and comfort for the evening. But I've never been checking out a girl and gone "holy god check out the pair of shoes on that!"...unless it was to insult a pair of dumb fuzzy ugg boots or make some other snarky comment. But evidently other girls notice girls shoes and make comments about loving them, and how great they are, and so on and so forth.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is that I don't understand women. And I've never wanted to bang a pair of shoes.
  • From Justin on 1/31/2008:
And also girls in Purple Velour pants/top outfits shouldn't be walking around Target at 3:00 PM with their poor little ugly dog shivering in their Louis Vatton bag...they should go to Los Angeles where this kind of absurd behavior is acceptable.

    Brett Favre vs. Tom Brady
    Mike, 1/18/2008 05:07:58 PM
Last weekend's football games were fantastic... perhaps one of the best division playoff weekends I've ever seen. This weekend will probably not be as exciting, but you never know. Here are my predictions:

Green Bay 31, NY Giants 24 - This will be a heartbreaker for the Giants, but consider this: Brett Favre's career record in sub-freezing games is an amazing 43-5.

New England 27, San Diego 13 - With SD's offense banged up, they will not be able to win the time of possession battle and, let's face it, every time Tom Brady touches the ball, New England is on a scoring drive. Still, the Chargers running game will keep it close in the first half.
  • From Mike on 1/21/2008:
Alright, so the Giants did it. Didn't see that coming. Didn't see that coming until right when that last field goal went through the uprights in overtime. Bravo, young Manning et al. But is this the team that takes down the 18-0 Pats? How does one calculate the tale of the tape for this network ratings delight slugfest? Does it all rest on the shoulders of Bill "The Hoodie" Belichick (142-84 career, 15-3 postseason) and Tom "I'm Still Not Fired" Coughlin (110-95 career, 7-6 postseason)? Or perhaps it comes down to Tom Brady (14-2 postseason, 25 TDs) vs. Eli Manning (3-2 postseason, 6 TDs)? But, as we saw yesterday, the game may be in the hands of the ephemeral running game of both teams. Brandon Jacobs and Laurence Maroney have made some clutch plays during this postseason... will this Superbowl improbably be fought on the ground?! On the positive side of things, the Giants finally made the big game without their blowhard crutch Tiki Barber. Speaking of Giants lore, here's a fact that will probably be mentioned 7 million times in the next two weeks: The last time the Giants were in the Superbowl, they faced the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, whose defense holds the record for least offensive points allowed in the regular season: 165. This year they face off against the Patriots who now hold the record for most offensive points scored: 560. What does this mean? I have no idea.

A final fact to consider before you lay your money down on the Pats despite the fact that they are giving 13-14 points in Vegas spreads: The last three Patriots Superbowl victories were won by exactly 3 points (02, 04, 05). Furthermore, the Pats already beat the Giants this season by, you guessed it, 3 points.

If the Superbowl is anything like the last two weeks of playoff football, it's gonna be an exciting one... we don't need your fancy commercials to stay entertained!
  • From Justin on 1/21/2008:
I personally think the most exciting aspect of this particular Super Bowl is that it will be immediately followed by a brand new episode of House!

I hear Hugh Laurie will actually be on the field in Arizona as a medical adviser.

    Top Ten LOST Episodes
    Mike, 1/10/2008 12:43:34 AM
Since this is officially LOST month (premiere on 1/31!) I thought I'd post my Top Ten Favorite LOST episodes. Now, all LOST episodes are pretty damn good, but these are the ones that knocked me on my ass and had me praising the show as the best on TV...

    10. The Long Con - Evil Charlie joins teams with Sawyer in order to con Locke out of the lostaway's guns. After a bunch of intense Others-heavy episodes in Season 2, this episode takes a step back and looks at the dynamics between just the beach dwellers-- the complex relationships between the main characters are really what makes everything else in the show work.
    9. Solitary - We get our first meeting with another island, Rosseau, and a chilling first look into Sayid's tortured (and tortuous past).
    8. The Man Behind The Curtain - 29 episodes after he was discovered on the island, part of Ben's background is revealed... during a sordid tale of mass murder.
    7. Two For the Road - BLAM BLAM. A lot of people say the deaths in LOST are pretty predictable, but Libby and Ana Lucia blindsided me and everybody else in the room. Michael's betrayal! The ramifications of this act are far from over (probably).
    6. Flashes Before Your Eyes - Desmond's most interesting flashback (or flashforward? or sideways?)... does this episode hold the answers to the rest of the series? Or is it just great TV?
    5. Exodus, Part 2 - Mr. Smiley takes Walt! Nobody saw this coming back when it went down. Sawyer gets shot and keeps an ax to grind all the way to my #1 pick...
    4. Numbers - 4 8 15 16 23 42. Season 1: Everyone was waiting to see Hurley's backstory and this episode blew minds all over the world.
    3. Live Together, Die Alone - Jack's immortal words ring true as Michael leads Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley into the belly of the beast. Fortunately, Sawyer believes Michael has been compromised. Unfortunately, Benjamin Linus is always a step ahead. Great season ender, 4 toed foot or not.
    2. The Other 48 Days - This episode broke from the traditional format and had me on the edge of my seat for all 48 days of the tail sections struggle with the island and the others.
    1. Through The Looking Glass - Best 2 hours of TV in years. Possibly ever. Charlie dies a hero. Hurley saves the day. Sawyer executes Mr. Smiley. Oh yeah... and bearded Jack and Kate. WHO IS IN THE COFFIN?! WHO IS IN NOT PENNY'S BOAT?!! CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 4!

    Random Ebay Prices
    Mike, 1/8/2008 11:36:28 PM
Back in March 2003, I did a random Ebay price search post and from time to time, we've posted other random net surveys of what weird stuff was available and priced at. I decided to take a trip back in time and see how prices have changed on the junk I originally looked up... here's what happened:

    Lisa Simpson Action Figure
    Was: $20, Today: $5.99

Leg Lamp (Like in A Christmas Story)
    Was: $150, Today: $31

    Dashboard Confessional Tickets
    Was: $56, Today: 41 Pounds ($81)
*This is kind of a weak comparison because only UK Dashboard tickets are up for sale at the moment

    Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
    Was: $400, Today: $895.50

    Basic Instinct DVD
    Was: $1.99, Today: $0.99

So, there you have it. Never underestimate the value of 45 year old paper featuring America's favorite mutants.

    American Gladiators!!!!!
    Justin, 1/6/2008 01:33:59 PM
Tonight is the night! The return of my beloved American Gladiators! Sure, deaf gladiator Siren, along with Turbo, Zap, Nitro, Laser, and Viper may have all retired their jousting sticks long ago...and yeah Larry Csonka is nowhere to be found...along with the fan favorite Atlasphere event... but hey I'm ready for the Gladiators of the new millennium!
I'm ready for new host Hulk Hogan!
But most of all, I'm ready for the return of Assault, The Wall, and the Eliminator.
I have my tivo all revved up and ready to go...do you?
  • From Mike on 1/7/2008:
I was both excited and apprehensive when NBC announced the return of American Gladiators. My memories of the show are fond, but this is the network that brought us such abominations as Deal or No Deal. After watching the 2 episode premiere tonight, I must say I was generally pleased with what I saw. Some of the classic events (powerball, hang tough, pyramid) were exactly the same, while a few others only had minor tweaks. The eliminator is totally revamped but it seems to be much more grueling than before... and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I also feared that the show would try to emulate the over-saturated reality show format with more personal background and talking heads, however the player background and in-arena interviews remained basically the same. The new Gladiators were pretty entertaining, particularly Wolf, Helga, and Militia, although it seemed like they all still needed practice on the events. Speaking of which, it felt like there were more commercials and less events than in the original incarnation (Wiki reports 6-8 events for each contender... tonight had to be less than that). Assault seemed to have been overcomplicated in its new incarnation. The new event, Earthquake, seemed a little silly, but it might have potential. Any time the gladiators fight the contenders one-on-one, things can get interesting. Despite small wrinkles, the new version was a blast to watch and I'm pleased to say I'm glad AG is back! Check it out Mondays at 8 on NBC!
