A pretty poor selection by the Academy, in my opinion, of a pretty good year for movies. There were only a few tough choices for me here, choosing between Catalina Moreno and Kate Winslet for best actress for one. I think The Aviator is offically overrated as of ... now.
  • From Steve on 1/25/2005:
i think paul giamatti got screwed over for best actor because the academy knew damn well jamie foxx is going to win it and didn't want to raise his hopes. therefore they decided to utterly crush them altogether.

and for best director, mike leigh for vera drake? c'mon, nobody saw vera drake, not even mike leigh! ah well, i guess it's to make it up to scorcese for screwing him over for goodfellas. either way, gondry got screwed over just like giamatti.
  • From Mike on 1/28/2005:
Of note, I would have seen Vera Drake but upon arriving at the theater that night, Brian and I were offered free tickets to a sneak of Sideways... the world works in mysterious ways. Or does it?

    X-Men Powers I Wish I Had...
    Mike, 1/19/2005 12:09:33 AM
... by hours of the working day:

8:00 AM - Cyclops' optic blasts: just let me sit at my desk and wake up and leave me alone!
9:00 AM - Jean Grey's telekenesis: get my breakfast without getting up
10:00 AM - Magneto's magnetism: rearrange the office furniture a few times, maybe attempt to establish a new world order where mutant enslaves man
11:00 AM - Xavier's psychic powers: have the office do my bidding and my bidding alone until it becomes tiresome
12:00 PM - Storm's weather control: create an avalanche of snow blocking the exit and freaking out people trying to get to lunch
1:00 PM - Nightcrawler's teleportation: no explanation needed
2:00 PM - Wolverine's healing factor: this is the part of the day that requires maximum endurance
3:00 PM - Jubilee's whatever: a laser light show to knock my coworkers out of their afternoon stupors
4:00 PM - Quicksilver's super speed: get me home tootsweet!

    Whats In The Guitar Case?
    Justin, 1/9/2005 10:43:57 PM
In an effort to learn how to play my own guitar, I have now taken up studying the guitar techniques of other players. I will now share with you my findings.

The "Wild And Crazy Spastic Flying Long Hair Technique" - Employed by:Jim from Jimmy Eat World - When this guy is rocking your you'll know it instantly. Note the jerking, almost seizure like movements, and the hair flying into the face. You will also see an intense staring, almost as if he'd just killed another man and enjoyed it.

The "I'm Getting Shin Splints Here! Technique" - Employed by:Everyone in Good Charlotte - Anyone who has ever been to a punk show will notice the constant short jumping every couple of seconds. The feet will inevitably be so close that it will look like the shoes are tied together. Incidentally this does nothing to add anything to the playing of the person.

The "Whoa, The Whole Room Is Spinning Technique" - Employed by:Many rockers, such as Newfound Glory, The Early November, and Yellowcard - This tenchique involves the player simply spinning around in place with the guitar out whilst playing. This can only be done for several seconds before nausea is induced. Also watch you don't bash your lead singer in the head...speaking of which...

The "Wild And Crazy, Standing, Sitting, Kneeling, Laying, I'm On Speed Technique" - Employed by Gabe of Midtown - Gabe will jump, flip his bass around, land, hit the ground, and then smack his strings exaggeratedly and with much gusto. This is just one of the reasons Midtown's performances are so damn great. But he did accidentally bash his guitarist in the head once, resulting in bleeding, and staples in the head.

The "I Think I'm A Ballerina Technique" - Employed by:Fallout Boy - A running and jumping variation of the spinning technique. Though I could swear I saw some toe twinkling mid-jump a couple of times.

    And finally...

The "Gunfighter Technique" - Employed by:Antonio Banderas & Scotty from Allister - Antonio Banderas is perhaps the only man on earth who can have a gunfight while strumming beautifully on his guitar. Hes also been known to smash dirtbag drug dealers in the face with his ax, and modify his ax into a machine gun. Scotty on the other hand likes to point his bass at the crowd and pretend its a gun and hes shooting it during the climax of "Somewhere On Fullerton". Both guys rock.

2005 Needed Some Sort Of Post!
    Justin, 1/7/2005 09:38:05 PM
Happy New Year faithful readers! If you haven't heard about the kick ass partay at Mike's place last weekend by now, I'm sure you don't care, but I would like to take this time to publically mourn the destruction of Mike's Bubble Machine. Pictures to follow.
I'm also saddened to report that after seven years together, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt have decided to split. To this I say, ADVANTAGE JUSTIN.
